Caltech and Stanford Pictures

note: Crossposted from Caltech forums.

The following is a picture gallery showing my visits to Caltech and Stanford and random things in between. Feel free to ask me questions. Directly below is the link to the pictures and below the link is a summary of them.

The first few pics are of Caltech’s campus. The bowl of noodles is an example of the incredible food offered at Caltech… noodles with fresh meat and vegetables for an inexpensive price (best university food ever!). Even my mom was shocked at the quality of food. Next we have a few more pictures of Caltech and a pic of me (in black) and Ben Golub (the smaller guy :P). After that is a picture of Pasadena and a bunch of pictures of a guy getting his head shaved outside of the cafeteria. I did not take any more pictures of dinner than that guy getting his head shaved, but I ate in Blacker House for dinner, drank green (a mix of blue powerade and orange juices) and threw rolls at everyone (except the waiters!!!) Ben invited me to that and I am very grateful for the experience.

Next, we come upon random pictures of the road trip between LA and San Francisco, and a picture of my mom.

Finally, we are at Stanford, as you can see from the campus shot. I did not take as many pictures of the campus as I should have, but it is very beautiful. Note the fountain—it is nicknamed (or called, I am not sure) the claw, but it is supposed to represent the intellect of a Stanford student rising out of a fire or something. I don’t think our guide was completely sure about it, heh.

Most of the remaining pictures are of a Mech E 210 final—they had to design robots that would in some way use a foam ball to hit targets that beamed infrared signals at them. I got invited by an engineering student I met on campus, and it was awesome…great fun.

The last picture is Stanford’s bookstore. It is HUGE! Four stories, all filled with books and materials. I purchased the latest James Patterson there for my flight :P

Well, this is it—thanks for viewing the gallery and hopefully it gave you a taste of what these two fine universities are like.

haha, the mech e final looks like fun

how was the food at Stanford?
also, im planning a trip up there during spring break, did your family make any special reservations by calling up Stanford? Thanks!

o and thx for those pics! that fountain looks pretty tite

is that the mongolian bbq noodles where you choose the veggies and tell them the meat and they do it on a big flat skillet thingy? I had that like every day at JPL... MMM SOOO YUMMY haha yeah tell us about food at Stanford!

Yes Blue, it's that thing :D

Regarding stanford food, it's ok but not as good as Caltech's. Stanford's student union reminds me of the average mall food court. Caltech's cafeteria is really kinda unique. Keep in mind this is not the student food--I had a chance for a student dinner at Caltech but not at Stanford so cannot compare.

Oh yeah and Juz, if you signed up for the discover stanford tour that's all you need to do. After the tour go up to undergraduate admissions and get a listing of classes you can attend (I attended Engineering Economy and met the guy who got me into Mech E). Basically try to talk to everyone and tell them what you are interested in :)

lol hm...I wonder how student food is at Stanford. hopefully good because I see a higher chance of going there than Caltech seeing as I'll prolly be rejected from Caltech...oh well, i can always eat good food!

ah, thx a lot lizzardfire, ill do that

wow caltech has mongolian beef / bbq / food?!? that's some good stuff.

i've visited stanford a couple times; the food's okay...smaller-sized dining in comparison to larger public universities (ucla / berk / sd, etc...), but that's not necessarily a bad thing...

Let me enlighten you a bit on Caltech food...

Caltech lunch is amazing. I live for Caltech lunch. Most of my friends are mongo bowl addicts and for good reason. I, personally, cannot get enough of their wood-fired pizzas - highlights being BBQ chicken and shrimp scampi.

Caltech dinner is less amazing - by far. I don't think it's bad, but it's certainly not comparable to Chandler. Most of the dinner meals are okay/goodish, but they cycle pretty often so they get old (though they just reworked the menu's this term for the better).

Here's a dinner menu if you're curious:
http://dining.caltech.edu/board.php

I'm sure that's pretty standard at other schools but definitely understand that Caltech Lunch >> Caltech Dinner in terms of food quality (and value).

That Mech E class looks pretty cool!

Which way are you leaning (or have you decided) lizzardfire?

Honestly, I don't want to decide until I found out where I got in. There are disadvantages and advantages-- I have a list of them for all of my schools. Waiting for admissions!
