Food at Stanford

You know, I think that with all of the other amazing things about Stanford covered in this forum, the food has been thoroughly neglected. This is a post for students to discuss the food at Stanford of all kinds for future and prospective students. Watcha eatin' down there?

Don't hold back either, we want all of the JUICY, DELICIOUS details. Give us the DEEP DISH.

(puns!)

love ya punzzzz <3

TASTES SO GOOD omg
i visited there and ate with my friend that goes there
DELICIOUS

I think the general consensus is that the food is fine, but you end up eating in the same places so it kind of gets old after a while.

What kind of food is popular at Stanford? Do they have a lot of bar/grill type places in the area? What about good sushi? What are the popular restaurants nearby and what's the pricetag on them? What about the Late Night??

This kind you eat? I really have no idea what you mean with this question.

Yes and no. There's a pretty limited selection of stuff on campus. Off campus is a different story, but getting there can be an issue, especially for freshman. Downtown Palo Alto has some places that would probably meet your criteria. Do a search for the Old Pro or Blue Chalk (both in Palo Alto).

There are a ton of sushi places near campus. Everybody has their druthers as to which place is the best, but there's more than enough places to keep you happy I'm sure.

When you go off campus you're basically in suburbia. They have anything and everything, from the very nice to the very casual. The only type of cuisine I've found lacking is BBQ, but that might be because I'm from the south and picky about my meat.

There's several late night places on campus open 'till 2. Some combination of them is/are open every night of the week. They serve basic stuff like shakes, sodas, chicken fingers, cheese sticks, pizza, etc.

governor's corner dining society

This looks pretty cool, but I am guessing it is for seniors or juniors.

That's mainly when you live in a place called Suites.

I stayed at Stanford for a week and was pretty much confined to a single dining hall. As with any dining hall, it gets tiring quickly if you eat freaking breakfast, lunch, and dinner there everyday, so it's really nothing new.

But in defense of Stanford's dining halls, they have a pretty wide variety of foods and do change a certain section of the cafeteria every day. If I remember correctly, there is always hot dogs and hamburgers for dinner, but they also toss in a few new things like grilled vegetables and like different kinds of pastas and stuff and variations on salads. I forgot what other main selections there were, but I know there were others that I ate because I avoided the hot dogs and hamburgers (too plain for me for a cafeteria...I can eat those outside in nearby restaurants everyday lol)

There's always a selection of desserts (I never went to them though -- either too full to stuff those in/conscious of gaining weight from eating too much :P) and I believe they do change. Cakes, pies, etc... you name it, they probably have it if it's reasonable enough. I remember there was Jell-o there too :]

Uhmmm...they switch juices everyday I remember. I didn't have the same juice everyday. Coffee was VERY plain. I dunno why, but they offer Starbucks there, but do it no justice cuz it tasted like water. Mmmm....

Okay, that's just ONE dining hall (Stern, I believe) on ONE week on ONE summer. So there's definitely a wide variety of other things I don't know about Stanford dining. There's another courtyard that has much better food (Jamba Juice, Pete's Coffee I think, various other "Brand Name" eateries) and I got to visit there a few times just to sit down and talk with friends when we were on break.

Sorry if this is not an accurate representation of Stanford dining. I'm just putting what I know based on the short experience. I know nothing of off-campus dining, which I expect should be slightly better than what I've said here.

My son was not a fan of dining at Flo Mo freshman year. Stanford forces a meal plan on students unless they live in a residence with kitchens. He did not like the dining hall at Lantana either last year. He is much happier this year in a suite-type dorm with his own little kitchen. That is just one young man's perspective. Most students eat at their residence dining hall, even though they can go to any dining hall on campus with the meal plan. But there are on-campus eateries (several) at which you can't use either the meal plan or Cardinal dollars.
