Hi, I am a high school sophomore interested in obtaining an internship at Caltech University. I currently have a few questions:

-What should I include in my essay to the professor?
-Should i have any significant prior knowledge before working with a professor in the physics department?
-I just want to assist the professor in any way I can, so what should I tell him or her?
-Finally, when should I begin sending the emails? Do they accept you only in the summer?

Thank you

When my son applied for an internship at a local university a few years back, he called up the Physics department and talked with the department secretary and she suggested he send his resume and areas of research interest. He then got a call from two of the professors for interviews and finally got an offer from one of them.

You may want to call the Caltech Physics department and ask them the procedure they follow for internships. Also, if you have specific areas of interest and can identify professors who are conducting research in this area, you may want to contact them as well. Finally, you can also look at internship opportunities at JPL
