Caltech seems like a great school, academically, but collegeboard.com tells me it is 71% male. So, is Caltech just full of "nerdy" boys or what do you guys do for a social life?

Dare I ask what "Sausage Fest" is supposed to mean?

A sausage fest is a party with no girls and all guys. "Sausage" is used in this context as a euphemism for a male body part. Sausage fests are usually undesirable due to the lack of females, unless you are the type that doesnt like girls anyway.

71% male is incorrect -- the most recently admitted class is 71/29, but that is an unusually bad ratio. Overall, the school has been closer to 67/33 over the past decade.

In any case, the ratio is a problem only for those who insist on making it one. It's not hard to find reasonably balanced social groups, since a lot more guys hole up and work all the time than girls.

Caltech is certainly not a place you should go if you are male and your main goal in college is to date a lot. But if you want to have a healthy social life, you can have one.

It would certainly be nice if we could have a 50/50 ratio. However, the ratio is the price we pay for (1) focusing on science and (2) admitting students based on merit alone. Giving up on either (1) or (2) would be a high price to pay.

Amen, Ben.

"Giving up on either (1) or (2) would be a high price to pay."

even more so because they only have 1000 undergrads.

isn't MIT trying to fight the "sausage fest" image by admiting more girls? do you think MIT is admiting girls over more qualified boys to improve the ratio and promote science and technology for women (i agree with the latter tho)?

Well, we let lizzardfire in, so clearly we've already given up some of (2).

For those of you rueing the ratio, consider your college experience to be an introduction to your future work environment. If you are planning on becoming an engineer, you'll find workplace ratios similar to, or even higher than, Caltech's. However, despite the school and workplace odds, almost all male engineers find mates.

haha screw you neapol1s.

Haha. I had resolved not to post here for a while, but have to thank neapolis and lizzardfire for making me laugh on a very rainy, slightly depressing (3 days before senior year officially starts) Sunday.

What? I've already been to school for 3 weeks already...lucky northeners...

"sausage fest"....

nice use of imagery there...I think I'm gonna go puke now....

Your post about puking does not add to the aesthetic value of the imagery on this thread.

This post is hilarious for many, many reasons….

Guys, please don't tell me that you've never heard the term "sausage fest" before....

... who said I was a guy?

I didn't... it's an all inclusive term. Using "people" in place of "guys" is often seen as condescending. Just can't win, can I?

neapol1s is a guy.

There, I said it.

Edit: mmcduff, he was just kidding. Ignore neapol1s's bad sense of humor. :-P

There are other colleges in the area. Caltech guys can go out and meet girls at UCLA, although with the traffic jams and/or lack of a vehicle, dating would be a major challenge. Luckily, there are some community colleges that are closer.

To be honest, socially speaking, Caltech is definitely near the bottom of the barrel. There really isn't much to do.

I disagree with the last statement. For some people, Caltech is one of a very few places where they could be socially happy. It certainly is bottom of the barrel from some perspectives, but that is also true of [insert huge state party school here] and [insert charming liberal arts college here].
