Caltech Undergrad Physic Requirement

Hello all,

I know that CalTech has a physics requirement for prospective freshmen. Is it alright if I took the physics class at a community college instead of my school?

Thanks :)

Probably. It's not uncommon for Caltech students to have taken classes at a local college or community college, so I'm sure admissions would be fine with it, as long as it was a legit physics course.

Thanks, dauntless.

I took a different physics path than most people. I took Physics 2A which is the equivalent of pre-AP physics by CollegeBoard standards. This year, I'm taking physics 4D which is quantum physics (post-AP) and 4C which is electricity and magnetism.

I hope admission officers are alright with this.

When I applied I had only taken regular, non-calc-based high school physics (and nothing senior year, either). The most complicated thing I did for that class involved timing a wooden block's descent down an incline. Caltech let me in and I ended up doing great in the "anal-ytical" physics track freshman year. So not only will it not matter for admission, but you won't be at an extreme disadvantage, either.

I also took a lot of courses at a CC (but not in physics - gross!) and I think that admissions officers like to see that. It shows that you're "taking advantage of all of the opportunities available to you" or some-such.
