I’m glad it paid off @Jammose ! I’ll always wonder if applying ED might have increased my chances at this scholarship, but alas, who knows. I’m super happy for all of you that got in, and wish you the best for all your college endeavors!
@pineapple86 I’m late to this, but I was a finalist as well although I wasn’t chosen as a winner. I applied ED and Ms. Lucas told me that would not be a factor in choosing the winners
@Jammose Do you mind sharing your view on what you think clinched the scholarship for you? Some others have posted their stats. Wondering about the EC and community leadership pieces of this scholarship and whether my junior has the basics of what is needed to make a run for this? Also appreciate any other merit based scholarship similar to this that you applied to? Thank you. Parent of current HS junior
The Cameron Impact Scholarship is all about finding and investing in students who will make an impact on the people around them and the world in the future. Because of this mission of the BCEF, the best way to find people that will make that impact is finding people that have already made an impact on their communities in high school.
The scholarship is of course looking for students with high academic achievement in the classroom and in competitions if applicable, are very involved in ECs and community service, and all of that. But they also want that something special. They’re looking for one impact you’ve made that stands out; maybe you started a charity, did some high-level and applicable scientific research, made an outreach program for students that has spread across the country, or something of that level. I would highly recommend going to http://www.bryancameroneducationfoundation.org/cameron-impact-scholars/directory to read about what the current scholars have done. It may seem like it’s unattainable to achieve something of this scope, but it just takes hard work, dedication, and perseverance to stick with it. Also don’t get discouraged from applying by reading these! They are meant to inspire you to keep up the hard work and find something you’re passionate about that will also make an impact on those around you.
There’s no one specific thing they’re looking for; all of the scholars have very different goals, career paths, majors of choice, and impacts they’ve made in high school. What unites all of them is that they have made impacts on the people around them already, and strive towards continuing that impact in college and beyond. the BCEF wants to invest in these students so that they can achieve their goals and dreams.
Once again, don’t get discouraged thinking that you won’t win! I felt this way when I was applying, thinking that surely there would be plenty of people more qualified than me to win this full tuition scholarship for anywhere. It worked out for me, and I feel confident that if you have put in the work and you have passion for that work you’ve done, then you can find success too. Good luck!
Hey guys! I know that this thread was intended for the class of 2017, but I’m applying for this scholarship from the class of 2018 and I had a question about the application process (if any of you are still around!) I just submitted my portion of the application and sent the recommendation links to my teachers, but I can’t seem to find a way to review my application. When I click ‘my applications’ it shows ‘BCEF-3898’ but when I click on it it just takes me to a page saying ‘Application name: BCEF-3989’. I’m somewhat unnerved that I can’t view my completed application, and I’m worried that this means that my application didn’t submit correctly. If any of you who went through this last year have any clarification it would be very much appreciated! Thanks!
@Ktm2499 I believe that happened to me too.
Where on the application does it ask for teacher recommendations? Thanks.
Oh okay, thank you so much! @pineapple86
After you submit your portion of the application, you’ll be redirected to a page which gives you the link for teacher recommendations @pickles666. Good luck applying!
Are the teacher recommendations required to be sent in by the early application deadline? Thanks. @Ktm2499
Yes, recommendations are due before the application deadlines. (If you’re applying early, then yes, by the early deadline, but if not then you have until Sep. 15) @pickles666
I have a quick question about one of the essay prompts. Does “Describe a meaningful public service activity you participated in” mean describing one event or can I describe a routine volunteering experience I find meaningful?(Sorry for the over analyzation - I tend to overthink such prompts XD)
@insertcleverpun I don’t think it makes a difference? I will let you know, from personal experience and from reading the winners’ bios, that the people who win this scholarship (and others like it, Coca Cola for example) typically have their own service projects/charities/organizations to which they’ve dedicated a lot of time and energy.
Does applying ED increase someone’s chances? Also, do both ED and RD applicants receive their phone calls for finalists at the same time in fall OR do ED folks get selected early on? I am trying to see from Bryan Cameron selection time-line standpoint, if it would help to apply early so as to know if you are a finalist ahead of the College applications(ED). Thanks for your inputs in advance.
^^^ @sowaatnou I’m also curious as to the difference between the deadlines. I’m considering bumping my application to the regular decision period in order to make improvements, but I’m worried that that it would leave me at a statistical disadvantage (idk if early apps get prior consideration or have a greater chance of being selected).
@ktm2499 Did you ever find a way to review your app? My son gets a similar situation to your post 144 when he signs in and goes to “my application.” Just wondered if anyone had figured out a way to go back and look at the application.
@gclsports Unfortunately, I don’t think that there’s a way to review your application. I emailed admin and they said that it’s impossible. Best of luck to your son!
Thanks @ktm2499. Good luck to you too!
I just found out about this and I’ll have to apply to the reg decision pool. Think it’ll make a difference versus applying early?
You will not be at a disadvantage for applying regular decision instead of early!
