Has anyone had any experience with Camp Encore-Coda (summer conservatory program) in Sweden Maine? Because of scheduling D (Flute) can either go back to Interlochen this summer for the second three week session, to the above for six and a half weeks or to other programs that start after 6-29 within 700 or so miles of Cleveland(suggestions anyone?)
As always thanks for any help and suggestions. Happy Holidays all.

No personal or hearsay experience, but the name is familiar, as they always advertised substantially in our local youth symphony and area high school music programs. These were high quality organizations, the ys typically sent about 6-8 graduating seniors a year into conservatory/conservatory programs. The local market must have been strong enough to justify the long term advertising within the local region. Scanning the faculty, no name is familiar, but a lot of the faculty have been with the program a number of seasons, and many times continuity speaks to a well run program.

My recollection is that is a combined music/other activity camp program, with music at the forefront, but the conservatory program seems pretty much music centric. I don’t know if the program approaches the level of Interlochen, but it has been running under the same owners since the 50’s.

Enjoy the season.

I went wayy back when I was 10 or 11. It’s a very fun program but, truthfully, not all that musically challenging for a serious student. When I first started bass it was good for me because it gave me a lot of time to practice in a really supportive environment. Whether or not your daughter should go depends on how old your daughter is and how serious she is about her instrument.

I don’t know anything about that particular camp, but you might also look at Kinhaven in Vermont; New England Music Camp in Maine; Luzerne Music Center in upstate New York; and Greenwood in Massachusetts. I am not sure about start dates, but all are camps with good reputations.

Since you mention Interlochen: My son has attended Interlochen for several summers. His closest friend (from homee) attended Camp Encore-Coda for two summers before switching to Interlochen. He was by far the best at his instrument at Encore-Coda and one of the best musicians there. He was last chair in band (wind symphony) during his entire first year at Interlochen. While he enjoyed Encore-Coda, there was no comparison between the two in terms of the talent or rigor of the programs.

Just a Dad
can your D’s schedule allow the Debost Flute week at Oberlin ? This year its June 27-July 4 2010
D did this in HS it was invaluable experience. She combined it with the Eastman Conservatory 3 week Pre College program (sorry dont remember the exact name)which also was invaluable in helping her decide that a music major was right for her…it was a combo of ensembles, solos, classes, etc.
DeBost is by audition, recording to be sent.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. It has helped to provide some direction for the summer. She’s a very serious student and a member of the local wind symphony (there are three groups within it, and not to brag, but her first time out she made first chair in one of the groups and loves it) She’s traveling with them on tour to Spain and Portugal starting in mid June, and returning on the 28th, so the Debost program is out for now as are many that are more than three weeks. I think in the long run it is either going to be 3 weeks at Interlochen (intermediate), arriving late at NE Music Camp or maybe taking extra lessons with the second teacher she is starting to work with (subs for the Cleveland Orchestra). All that and a search for a upgraded headjoint too (she’s on a borrowed Nagahara now). Does anyone have the winning Ohio lottery numbers for this weekend? Thanks again.

Check out the Aria Flute Boot camp in Western Ma. It’s a two week program early in August with Amy Porter and Linda Toote (Boston Conservatory). Great program.

Thanks for the info on Aria. We’ll take a look at that in the future when she’s old enough to attend. (16 and up according to the info I found).

In the meantime we’re also looking at the NYSMF and the International Flute Institute they are starting this year. If anyone has info on the NYSMF, we’d sure appreciate hearing about it.

Be sure to open the threads on the post links I listed, so you can see the questions/answers within the context.

Lots of info here.

My daughters love Encore Coda. While on the surface EC may not seem as serious and high level than some of the other camps mentioned, there are many very accomplished musicians (including counselors as well as campers), and the more accomplished players find great chamber groups, small combos, etc. in order to challenges themselves musically. I think the campers have a broader range of ability than at some other camps. EC is serious but not stuffy, and it’s more informal than some of the other mentioned music camps, with swimming, boating, etc. sharing the day with music, depending on the campers’ choices.

What I like best is the level of independence and self-direction the camp allows. Kids are not pushed but they are encouraged, and have lots of opportunities and options. Since it is off in the woods in a self-contained space and kids are not allowed cellphones, computer access, or to keep money, they get a lot of personal freedom without much risk of getting into trouble. I think this really has allowed my daughter to grow a lot in areas such as personal responsibility, leadership, etc. Musically, I really like that she gets a chance to play around with lots of different things, which I think really helps her explore what facets of music she really connects with and deepens her love of music. The campers are also really supportive of each other - it doesn’t have a competitive vibe at all.

I guess it depends what your kid is looking for in a music camp. My kids get enough high level top flight music stuff in the company of driven, competitive musicians during the year, so the balance in Encore Coda really appeals to us.

I know this thread is now a year old, but I suspect people will still search it over the coming year as they prepare for next summer’s music festivals.

I want to second chandelle’s comments on Encore-Coda, which I found very helpful as we were making our own decision about summer music programs. As a younger high school student, my son also was first chair on his instrument at Encore-Coda, and among the best musicians in camp. Still, he enjoyed being among a community of serious-enough musicians, playing a wide variety of music in a range of ensembles, without having to deal with the intensely competitive character of so many programs. Living in a genteely rustic cabin on a quiet lake in the woods was definitely a plus! And I welcomed that he was required to swim daily – definitely a help for an exercise-adverse kid.

So yes, I would recommend this camp for the high school student who is genuinely serious about music but who doesn’t want the pre-conservatory competition, as well as for other middle and high school students who enjoy music and want to continue to grow in a supportive music-centric community.

my kids go here every summer. they love it. one plays piano and one clarinett. They have made good friends whom they keep in touch with all year. The kids alway advance in their music each summer.

My daughter went to encore coda from age 10 to 15…invited to be a counseller there this summer.
the good news, beautiful, safe, great kids…pretty straight…very strict on behavior but lots of fun stuff to do
many different opportunities to be in multiple ensembles, the conservatory is outstanding and adults play along with campers so it ups the level.

But, most kids who are in an intense school year music program balance it with this program. There is just music playing in all forms all day long everywhere. There are multiple levels of string ensembles, wind ensembles, voice groups, chamber groups, jazz groups…

No cliques, no pressure, lots of teachers willing to help, teach. A lot of joy.

A balance of girls and boys, a clean and well kept environment.

The best news? No cell phones, no computers…great brain development!
