Campbells (AP Bio) Question :)

In AP Bio we are getting new Campbell's textbooks (7th ed. to the newest ed.). We have to outline all chapters over the year so since I'm going to do USABO next year I was going to outline most of the chapters over the summer while I was reading for USABO. However, I was wondering if he'll accept my outlines because the edition will have changed...is it substantially different? Should I order the ed. we're getting in class over Amazon so I can outline?

Thanks!! I know this is sort of an esoteric question (who is familiar with both???) so I'd really appreciate if you could answer my question :)

My recommendation is to buy the Cliffs AP Bio book. It follows Campbell almost exactly, and should really help with your outlines.

Also, due to funding cuts in NC public schools, 3 members of my AP Bio class had the 5th Ed. until Christmas, when we were generously given more funding by the State to buy three 6th Ed. books for them. There wasn’t a significant difference between the two, and in fact one of the students who had the 5th Ed. earned the highest grade in the course. This makes me think that there won’t be much of a difference with the 7th Ed. as well.

The major difference between the editions is in the diagrams and pictures that are given. Between editions, some minor errors are also fixed up, but nothing groundbreaking or even noticeable.

^ Actually, I think in the 8th edition they combined some chapters or rearranged them or something like that.

Anyways, you can find outlines online… already done for you. I think I have them for both the 7th and 8th editions. PM me if you’re interested.

Thanks for your help everyone!! I think that I’m going to see if I can get an 8th ed. copy from the library…if not, I’ll just outline anyway - I can always add to it if needed.

@ SeekinUni thanks for the offer! I think I’ll take you up on that offer so that I can compare the editions, but unfortunately I can’t use them for class…all have to be handwritten - I suppose it’s so he knows we’ve read it but it does seem like a waste bc some people (including myself) find it more beneficial just to read things…writing takes up soooo much time!!

Thanks again everyone :)

7th isn’t the newest there’s a 9th

^ Oh no! Is the 9th substantially different from the 7th then? Thanks for pointing that out :)

I’m pretty sure the 8th edition is the latest. I see no sign of a 9th edition on their website, but I may be missing it…

Yeah, 8th is the newest

Regarding BioO, some students that have taken my country’s test for the national team have said that Campbell’s is not enough. If you manage to memorize everything in there, you’ll probably know only about 30% of what is tested.

The other part comes from applying concepts.

^ I was planning on reading a few other books… Figured I get through Campbell’s first and see how it went. I’m sort of behind on preparing because until last week I was planning on focusing on self-studying APs and on Academic Decathlon, but I realized that I would enjoying USABO more and also the s-s APs wouldn’t make that much of a diff college admissions wise (will still def be doing AcaDec…just not so much the APs). But I’m working it out  haha so thanks for the input! Do you have any specific suggestions?

PS I know the workload of USABO will be heavier than just “self-studying a few APs” so I don’t want you to think I’m taking this overly lightly…I got yelled at for that at another thread haha so I just wanted to clarify

It’s okay. I’ve been yelled at before and it’s not a nice feeling so I don’t yell at anyone.

I don’t really have suggestions for USABO just that I know quite a fair bit of my country’s tests involve application and experimental design questions. Students from my country generally do quite well; we’ve never gotten below a silver.

It’s great that you found what you like! I, on the other hand, love learning about a lot of different subjects. I have a lot of interests ranging from physics to international relations so that’s why I’m self-studying a fair bit.

I think you’re really cool too. I just saw your chance thread that you created about a month ago.

Wow!! Very impressive! Where are you from?

Oh and I definitely know the feeling about learning a little bit about each subject. It is interesting, especially the overlap and connections between subjects. I don’t love the invertebrate part of biology but there are certainly things I love about Bio as well…I really hope the USABO thing works out!!

And haha thanks about the chance thread. Did you see that email from Princeton about self-studied I posted on that thread? I thought that was very interesting… Kinda of depressing though.

^what did it say?

It was just saying that self-studying APs isn’t necessarily beneficial…does not prove rigor…I was pretty disappointed but am still s-s a few anyway
