Campus Honors Program

My daughter, who will be home late today, just received a business size envelope from the Campus Honors Program. It is a bit on the thick side, so there must be more than one sheet of paper in it. Of course, I am wondering what it says. Any one else get one?

That is probably good. She is one of the lucky and talented 125 students who was accepted in the Campus Wide Honors Program. For my year, the statistic was 125 students out of 715 applicants total which were already top James Scholars (meaning they were at the top of the top 15% of their class) and those 715 applicants were chosen out of 7,300 students entering their freshman year!!! You should be very proud. It was one of my proudest moments. And due to circumstances out of my control I may not be able to stay in.

Anyways, congratulate your daughter on a job well done b/c I'm sure she not only deserves it but is coming home late due to other events that will have her stressed and tired haha.

The packet should have her acceptance letter, a booklet describing the benefits of being selected a Chancellor's Scholar (another name for CHP), and a list of honors courses that can be taken (one of the requirements is to take pre-selected honors courses) or where that list can be found.

Random story: When we were being oriented for one of our first days at college, we had a CHP get together. One of the interesting stories that day was a girl who talked about her Honors Entymology class and how nobody was likely to take it. A year or so later she was studying abroad in Brazil and she mentioned the name of her professor and there was a famous Brazilian entymologist she was studying with. He got really excited when he heard that her professor was the one he had been admiring and reading about. She had no idea her professor was that wide-spread and famous in the entymology world. All the professors teaching honors classes are reknowned in their fields so don't necessarily take a class in your major. Broaden your horizons. That is what those classes are for.

Thanks for the reply, Echo.

My daughter has come home and opened the letter. You were correct. She has been offered a spot in the Chancellor's Scholar program. Previously she was selected as a James Scholar (LAS) and has been awarded a Matthews Scholarship. We are proud of her.
