Before I start, yes I've read previous discussions on this, and yes I've read the description of the Program on U of I's website. Just wanted to get your guys' opinion on this!

I just want to know what the program is like from a student's view... is it worthwhile? Would you turn down a university like Northwestern or U of Chicago for this program? How difficult/rigorous are the courses?

Throw in your two-cents if you know what you're talking about! ;-)

It's a really tough call. I think the major thing right now is just wait. You don't even know if you're into CHP yet given that hundreds of applicants are considered. Therefore, I would wait to make decisions like this until you know if you've been accepted at all. I'm not saying you won't be, but it just seems like you might be jumping ahead a bit since I know decisions haven't been made yet. I just started helping with the process this Friday, so decisions won't be for a while.

So, what do you mean by "I just started helping with the process this Friday"? Do you take part in the actual process of determining who gets in?

Yeah, I'm really not assuming anything at this point... that would be pretty embarassing :) It's all hypothetical! I really just wanted to know how the program is overall for a student...

No problem at all. Grr...I wrote you a great post but the server crashed, so I'll try to recreate it.

I recently found out that current CHP students, get to look at anonymous student applications filled with extracurriculars, essays, etc. and rate them to help select members for next year's honors program. I don't know how much weight our selections are given, but I would assume that our opinions are taken rather seriously as current students.

As for the program overall, I highly recommend it. As a freshman student, CHP is probably my favorite part of my college experience, at least in the extracurricular realm. In addition to the prestige, CHP offers really cool opportunities and experiences. For instance, I got the opportunity to ring the Altgeld bells (a 'must do before you graduate' experience,) take a secret tour of the underground steam tunnels, and get credit for a one night course on apple tasting. In addition to really interesting academic/campus experiences, there are also fun social opportunities like coffee nights, dances, Halloween parties, etc. As for the classes, they are a mix of super easy classes and some more challenging. So far, I've only had the easy ones, taking courses on architecture and tourism thus far. The courses are all very interesting and typically not very intensive (you can find more challenging ones if that's what you seek.) It's really nice to have small classes with 14-16 kids and one-on-one interaction with a well-known, quality professor.

Overall, I highly recommend the program, and should you get in, I would definitely encourage you to heavily consider coming to the University of Illinois. :)

Oh, I was wondering about this too. I was accepted and obviously I'd love to be in CHP, but about when-ish are decisions coming out? I always jump whenever I get blue and orange envelopes in the mail but most of it is just FinAid junk XP

Decisions are still in the works, so don't expect letters for a while. The deadline for some of our decision making is this Thursday, so I expect decisions will begin to be made after that. Going by when I personally received my letter last year and from the information I know about admissions to CHP, I would look for a letter around early April. That's when I recall receiving mine.

No problem guys. I had lots of fun reading essays and helping make decisions, so post back if you make it, and if not, remember that they accept non-freshman into the program as well. So once you're on campus for a while, if you decide you want to join CHP, there is an application process. In other words, don't lose hope if you're not accepted. I believe they had to weed 1,500 of the top incoming freshman down to ~120, so it is always easy to let shining candidates slip by.

Hey, cooljay136 , I'm an international student who has decided to enroll in UIUC. Could you please tell me what the average SAT score of the freshmen invited to the CHP is? I havent sent my new Oct SAT score to UIUC and I'm afraid my May score is a little low to be considered by CHP. I regret not paying enough attention to the honor program information before. Isn't it too late to update my test scores and midyear GPA to UIUC?

CHP is rather mysterious and doesn't announce its cut-offs because I'm not sure that it has precise cut-offs. All I know is that they are allowed to sift through all of the applicants to the university and some how pick a cut-off (based on ACT, GPA, etc) as to which applicants are examined further. Then they look at essays, extracurriculars, etc in order to narrow it down to the final # who are invited to join.

As just a student in the program, I have no idea as to the average SAT, but I do know that you won't be able to find that information as it isn't publicly available or necessarily existent.

Now as for sending scores now, it's too late. They've already made decisions and only looked at the initial U of I application. Sorry.

Yup. Decisions were mailed at the end of last week or beginning of this week and many have already been received. But OOS or international will obviously take longer.

Hey guys! This is my first post. My daughter just received her invitation to CHP Tuesday. She'll be in bioengineering and her requirements will be pretty stiff (I think 132 hours). For those already in CHP, how difficult will it be to add an additional 3 hour course each of the first four semesters?

She was also invited to be in the Engineering James Scholar program. Should she choose one or the other (rather than both)? Would it be too much? Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

CHP appears pretty socially active. If i participate in the CHP social opportunities, along with my engineering study, would there be time to reasonably get involved in other social areas such as with a fraternity or band? Is it common to find CHP students involved in social areas outside CHP?
