Campus Honors Program

Is it difficult to be accepted to the Campus Honors Program (The Chancellor's Scholars Program)? On the UIUC website, it says that there are about 125 entering freshmen who join the program each year. Are there any current students who are a part of it and would recommend it to prospective students? Are the courses significantly harder?

No the courses are usually easier b/c they want you to broaden your perspectives and learn new things. I loved the course I took about contemporary theatre (I am a ChemE) b/c I learned so many things I wouldn't have known about it. B/c I'm into movies theatre trends are often a year or two behind movie trends and that was cool to learn. I also got to act. But my friends havent always liked their courses so try to choose based on what you wouldn't think to take.

But I see that you haven't even applied yet so here is the process. First you apply and get accepted. Then if you are in the top 15% of the college you are pretty much automatically placed in the James Scholar program. After that it takes a while but the top of the James Scholars are chosen and recommended to apply for CHP. It involves and essay and other things but is just basically showing what your application and other things wouldn't show so the essay is the main part.

The best part about the program is the registration. I get to register before every single other person on campus. At least a day or two before most others. I registered on Nov 1 for second semester. My non-honors, non-athlete friends registered around the 18th-20th. Huge difference. It has saved me so many headaches with scheduling. But beyond that the classes can be a bit of a hassle if your major is demanding like mine.

Regardless of what your favorite part is. It still feels great to be accepted tho. You can get involved with it but I had too much other stuff going on so I didn't but it is possible to get very involved with the organization and take advantage of funds for study-abroad and stuff like that. You can also see dress-rehearsals for Kranert for free and stuff. Just a bunch of stuff I wish I had more time for.
