Campus life and security at Penn

How is campus life at Penn? Apparently the campus is not in the best part of Philadelphia… Is security an issue there?

I heard people are killed at Penn all the time. The administration has installed no security, and gang warfare is pretty much rampant throughout campus... This is just hearsay, though. =/

lol I am a student at Penn and I am originally from Philadelphia. Trust me Penn is a totally different environment. In many ways Penn is like a little bubble and so different from the rest of Philadelphia. Penn is very safe. We have our own Police dept. and Penn spends a lot of money trying to keep us safe. I think that the thing with safety here is common sense. For instance, if you don't really know your way around Philadelphia, I wouldn't recommend walking around looking clueless at 1 in the morning. Also, Penn has a bus service and a walking service for students who are scared or uncomfortable walking alone at night. All you have to do is give them a call and within 15 minutes someone is there to walk you to the grocery store late at night or drive you there. Hope this is helpful.

killed by tests, yep...

and gangs of squirrels and mice are just so vicious!

definitely war down in west philly, kids.

I'm already getting scared of those test/exams to come...

I'm glad I read this thread. My parents are against me going to Penn because they think that it's too dangerous compared to Cornell. I wouldn't mind the urban setting compared to a rural setting. I'm from Guam; I think I need a little more city life now.

Oh, and I love the sarcasm on this thread too.

It's a full-blown quagmire here. The ghetto insurgency is growing in strength, but VP of security Maureen Rush insists it is "in its death throes"

Security overall is good, but despite all the cameras, Penn Police, etc. there is no force field that seals Penn off from W. Philadelphia, no barbed wire fences around the campus. Usually the two worlds stay pretty much separate but every once in a while the ghetto will come to Penn. Use common sense (no jogging alone at 3AM) but even if you have zero street smarts you'll probably survive just by luck.
