I went and toured Elon and loved the campus and communications school! Elon's surroundings, however, don't seem to offer as much as other schools.
Is there enough to do on campus that you don't get bored?
How often do you travel to Greensboro and the other surrounding towns?
Because Elon is somewhat isolated are the students less involved/interested in current events?

Hi! I am a current student and can assure you that I do not get bored!! There is so much to do on campus that I’ve never had to travel to Greensboro or any surrounding towns. It isn’t hard to get a group of people to go to off-campus activities, like concerts or something that, if you want.

PS good choice with the communications school. I am a communications student and love it!

Hey! I am a freshman at Elon and I love the location. The town of Elon itself is small and quiet, because it basically consists of the college and then a few neighborhoods, but this is great because it makes campus feel SO safe. I’ve walked back from the library at 2 AM multiple times, or to Acorn coffee shop at 12:30 AM and have felt very comfortable. (Which says a lot, since I’m actually a worry-wart most the time haha) Legit five minutes from Elon is Burlington though, which has pretty much everything you’ll want and need. There are so many restaurants, and stores, and shopping areas in Burlington; I was rather surprised how built up the area is. The biobus takes you on University Drive in Burlington, which is where Alamance Crossings is-- a nice outdoor shopping mall. There are also a few other large plazas along this route. Then about 15 minutes east of Elon, heading towards Durham, there is a Tanger Outlets, which has even more stores for shopping. My friends and I went there and it was really nice. Durham is about a 40 minute drive, and Greensboro is 25. I know a couple people from my floor ventured to Greensboro to check out the clubs there, but honestly nightlife in Elon is pretty great in my opinion, so I’ve never felt the need to go to Greensboro. Greensboro really doesn’t have much more than Burlington, except more venues, so I went there once for a concert in October.
So to answer your question, I go into Burlington weekly, and have been to both Greensboro and Durham only once. I’ve not felt bored at all though on campus; there’s always so much going on-- it’s actually kind of overwhelming since there are so many events going on on campus and I can’t possibly make it to all of them.
And then in terms of current events, the small town location has no correlation to how engaged students are with them. People still keep up with current events. You have about half the students that never paid attention to current events in the first place even before they came to college, so maybe they’re ignorant, but those who always kept up with current events definitely continue to do so. In my case, I was really bad at keeping up with current events back home, but have more been keeping up with them more since I’ve been at Elon. All freshmen have to take a Global Experience class, and every class we talked about current events both in the nation and the world. Also, Global Commons has huge TVs that always have the news streaming, and I’ve found that I’ve picked up on current events from that. And just in general, there are a lot of students on campus who will talk about current events and fill me in. During the whole Ferguson trial, there was even a protest on campus.

Sorry for the long-winded response. Hope this helps, though!
