My daughter is very interested in Elon. She is concerned about the location. Do students drive to Chapel Hill sometimes or is that too far? We plan to make a visit in March. Anyone have any knowledge of the education school?

Hi Candace -- Can't help you with the education school, but can give my impressions (as a parent) of the location. Elon town is just that, a pretty small town. The immediate campus area has the essentials (convenience stores, pharmacy, restaurants, bars). Other than that, it's on to Burlington, which is right next door to Elon. Burlington has much more shopping and dining, but not sure about how much it offers to students. Chapel Hill and Durham are driveable -- 45 minutes to an hour. Not something you'd do on the spur of the moment, but I got the impression that it was pretty common to make roadtrips on the weekends. Also, Greensboro is only 20-25 minutes away and has very nice entertainment areas (traffic can be horrendous on Wendover, however). FWIW, my son liked the area a lot and thought it had a good mix of being a typical college-town atmosphere with a lot more options pretty close by.

Thanks Iderochi, My daughter is very interested in Elon. We read your trip report and that was very informative. We will either visit in March or in the summer. There does look like alot going on in Greensboro and that doesn't seem far. But it looks like alot is going on for the students right on campus.

My D is a sophomore there and has plenty to do. A lot of people went to Chapel Hill last year for Halloween, but that was about it. They eat out a lot in Burlington- several places take Phoenix cash. Greensboro held the ACC championships and a lot went to that. Most kids have cars.

My son graduated from Elon in 2004. He spent some weekends at Chapel Hill (girl friend, now wife, was there). He also had friends at UNC Greensboro, so visited there some. His opinion was that there was more to do at Elon than at Chapel Hill, unless there was an event going on, ie Franklin Street Halloween party, concert, game, etc. He was certainly never bored at Elon. My younger son is at Wake and goes over to Elon occasionally for social weekends as he says everyone is so friendly there :).

Having just been to Elon for parent's weekend, I can assure you that the kids have plenty to do on the weekends. It seems they always have parties and other activities.

How would your son rank Elon's career placement office? Also, what did he major in?
Thanks in advance.

He was business/finance major with history minor. I know he got a few interviews through placement office and through some job fairs on campus. The job he ended up taking though he found through networking through some people he had worked with back in high school. I can't say how he would rank the placement office, just know that they did help--but also know he didn't pursue too much through them (I think alot because he knew what area he wanted to live in so focused mostly there)

Great info, thank you!

My daughter is interested in applying to Elon. What did your son think of the business program? My daughter is thinking of majoring in business also.

Thanks.

He liked the business program very much. Of course now they have the new building with the mock market and so forth--sounds really great, he's sorry he missed that. He has felt well prepared entering the job market. He went into financial advising job. Passed all his exams (not sure what they are all called) but the ones for insurances, securities and something else first try with little extra preparation. His wife, then girlfriend, was in business for a while at Chapel Hill. He sat in on some of her classes and felt they he got much more "hands on" kind of instruction at Elon. Of course, he wasn't in any upper division classes with her as she dropped business major.

Glad to hear he had a good experience.

Great info. D is visiting at the end of the month.

Just thought I'd add this in. Younger son just called and was on his way back to school after visiting at Elon for the evening. Again, he was impressed on how friendly everyone was. He said he walked into a frat house and people came up to him and asked who he was, was he visiting, what was his major, etc. He felt like they showed genuine interest, instead of the "what's this guy doing in our house" attitude. He also mentioned that most were not drinking which surprised him for a friday night!

we hide our drinking very well around people we don't know

^^^^
LOL grant. I'm sure you were one of the friendly, welcoming guys!

On a visit to Durham last weekend, I drove through Elon to get a gander at the campus. Nice place. The buildings reminded me of Princeton (just a little bit). My guess is that while UNC-Greensboro and NC A&T are nearby, Duke, UNC-CH and NC State are a bit of a hike.

Chapel Hill is about 30min as is Wake.

they're all about the same because you're going to need a car one way or another, and that's what it comes down to. unless you're dating someone at one of those schools or are very good friends with someone at one of those schools, its rare that you'll be making trips there a lot. for instance, i see a lot more people from wake visiting elon than i hear of people visiting wake. it just seems that everyone that leaves campus is going for a significant other :-P
