Campus life

Can i get the perspective of a current or former student about the overall life on campus (rose hill) i know its in New york and all about those opportunities. I know it doesn't have greek life (which i think could be a good thing). In regards to partying and what not is it really huge there, i mean I know theres a lot of it at any college but has anyone ever felt uncomfortable with an excess of partying or drinking? Another thing,in general how are the students? are most of them friendly and open to meeting new people? I'm sure there are some but are there a lot of rich/preppy/******bag type kids? Also say if I were interested in doing intramurals just to play a sport for fun and get some exercise in, is it easy to join a team even if I'm not the greatest athlete around? Thanks in advance and please give me honest opinions even if it means mentioning a down side. I real inside scoop, if I wanted to just hear about how perfect fordham is Id go on the school's website itself.

I will let current students answer for themselves. I am a parent of an alumn and I am an alumn.

Nobody here that I know of says Fordham is perfect. In fact, I have stated numerous times its far from perfect, but that every school has glossy brochures and admissions personnel who paint a rosy picture or avoid uncomfortable topics. What I attempt to do is to clarify remarks by others which I feel are too negative and often designed to harm Fordham for some strange reason (either a ■■■■■, a rejected applicant, an elitist from another school, or someone who is jealous).

The best way to see if you fit at Fordham (or any school) is to visit the campus during the school year when students are on campus. And take a tour given by the Rose Hill Society, and talk to students on Eddies Parade or in the cafeteria or around the dorms. or inside historic Rose Hill Gym. Form your own opinions about whether you fit or not.

Every school has a certain percentage of people who fit the description you provide. Fordham however draws from all over the country, from all sorts of backgrounds and prides itself on being diverse in every respect. But it is an expensive private school and its a medium sized school…not a large state school.

Greek life is where parties occur. Ask anyone at any school with a greek system. You know the stories on the internet about hazing fiascos. Fordham has honor societies. You earn admission to those through your hard work.

There will always be partiers as kids released from their parents for the first time in their lives and experiencing quasi independence will sometimes act out and make stupid decisions. Add to that the pressures to get the work done and the incrementally more difficult rigors of college versus high school and you will find some people searching for a method to chill out. Some make a bad choice in alcohol or drug abuse. Most kids at Fordham understand the repurcussions of doing that: personal health issues, personal safety issues, personal reputation issues, and ultimately failure in college. Most know how expensive Fordham is and that professors can and do flunk people.

I dont think Fordham’s drinking problem is really worse than you will find at most schools. But trust me when I say that the top students at Fordham (and Fordham ranks its students) are not the party animals.

Fordham kids are accepting and welcoming and really like you will find at most colleges. Some will be from rich families and some will be middle class and some may be from challenging circumstances. People are people.

If you come to Fordham with an open and accepting frame of mind, you will make friends easily. You will find people who are like you. You will avoid those who are irritating to you. There will be dorm drama, as in every dorm in every college across the country.

Fordham is special. Fordham has its own vibe. Fordham has its own uniqueness. So come visit and see for yourself. Most people walk around campus and say, “yes, this is me” or “Sorry, this is not me.”

Its the first time in your life that you truly make a decision about your future where you have a significant control over it, if not complete control, depending on your finances. (Assuming you are admitted.)

The secret to Fordham is its a classic college campus in the Bronx, while being urban. Or its a smaller version of NYU at Lincoln Center. And you can take classes at both campuses and many do. That is pretty special in my books. Good luck.

Thanks sovereign, btw I did visit already, the campus is beautiful and the people seemed nice just wanted to get more viewpoints frompeople with perspective

Football team is currently 6-0 and playing in front of standing room only crowds.

Basketball team is beginning to turn the table with a very good recruit class, again playing before packed house in the oldest gymnasium in the nation.

Baseball team has a solid freshman class coming in and will make some noise.

and volleyball, soccer ect… are all competitive.

As for intramurals. It is extremely easy to get involved and join a team or start your own with a few friends. You will have a few teams of very competitive players looking to win every game, but for the most part the vast majority are just out on the courts/fields having fun.

The new gym has state of the art equipment and is used by EVERYONE. Great place to get your workouts in and socialize at same time.

I liked Fordham when I visited. I LOVE Fordham now that I am here!

I’m a current student at Fordham RH and I’ll try to answer some of your questions.

-I consider the people I’ve met here to be probably the best thing about the school. While you can absolutely find all types, the majority of the people (or at least the ones I’m friends with) here are very friendly and down to earth. I’ve met good friends in dorms, classes, and through activities I’m involved with.

-There is always some partying at any college, but I have never felt uncomfortable nor did I ever feel pressure to do anything I didn’t want to do. During my first two years I lived in wellness dorms and although there were certainly partiers in even those dorms, it was not to the extent as it was in other dorms.

-Social life on weekends is either on campus with friends, going out in the Bronx (Arthur Avenue or the local bars), going into Manhattan (I end up going a few times/month on average for anything from theater to movies to concerts to museums to the Greenwich Village Halloween parade, the San Genaro festival etc.). Some weekends there are events on campus but I think Fordham could do a bit more in that regard. Still, I’ve never worried about finding something to do.

-Sports were never a huge deal here but the football team is undefeated so far this year and more and more people are going to games (the game last Saturday was sold out). Hopefully the basketball team will improve from last year as well. I’ve also gone to a number of Yankee games which very are easy to get to.

-And you didn’t ask but I’ve also been very happy with the academics at Fordham. I love the smaller classes and the fact that my profs. know who I am.

Hope that helps a little.

thanks blue shirt and spirit, definitely helpful
