Campus safety, dorms' safety

Current students,

How safe is it to leave valuable items in the room? I was thinking about bringing mu iPod speakers, camera, and stuff like that. Do you usually lock your rooms and each roommate has a key? Has there been any theft in the past?

Thanks!!!

The campus is generally safe for that sort of thing. IE you can leave your stuff unattended in public areas without fear of people taking your valuables. However, theft is not unheard of and people do get things stolen.

I know campus po wishes we’d lock our doors more often. Personally, I gave up after the first month and nothing’s happened. I can’t say I’d recommend pushing your luck like a lot of people do. Each person gets their own key, so you should work out a room locking level with your roommate that you’re comfortable with.

Yeah, pretty much everyone brings those items that you mentioned so stuff like that isn’t a big deal. I wouldn’t bring your family heirloom or something but generally, things are safe in your room. Just be smart about leaving your door unlocked, particularly over long weekends or times when lots of off-campus people could be on campus (eg large parties, etc)

With the exception of incidents that took place last year (after I graduated), I would say that personal campus (outdoor/night) safety at Wellesley is excellent. It’s one of the advantages that comes with Wellesley’s location in a upper class suburb without night life of any kind.

I have heard campus police say that theft is the biggest problem they have to deal with. Most common is bike theft, which judging from people who have recovered their missing bikes, is casual, on-campus “borrowing”. That kind of theft is preventable with a bike lock of any kind, not necessarily one of the expensive ones that are necessary in a city like Cambridge. If you bring a bike to campus, pick out the lock that you can use quickly, otherwise it’s easy to start not using it.

I’ve never had problems with theft when I’ve had my door unlocked (more often than not) or the one time first year I tossed my coat on top of my laptop in a table in the back corner of the Clapp basement and went to a meeting for an hour.

There was a devastating incident a couple years back where someone stole several laptops and other valuables from unlocked rooms in Lake. I don’t believe the laptops were ever recovered- there was a party going on, and it was established that it was some off-campus, male attendee who wandered off. Incidents like that are preventable by actually following guest policies, as uptight as they may seem, and locking doors on occasions when guest traffic through the dorms is high.

The highest incidents of theft are common fridge food and laundry things left in the laundry room, as very preventable.
