Level of feelings of safety

Current Cornell students, I was wondering how safe you felt leaving your stuff out in the open. Is it pretty common for things to get stolen? What are the repercussions of students that steal other students' belongings? Would I need to lock my room all the time and watch my stuff out in the open all the time? Or would you say Cornell is just like everywhere else, not exactly a haven for crime but "use common sense"?

leave your laptop unattended in a library? itll probably get stolen. its all about being smart about your things. even though my room is pretty isolated, i still lock my door everytime i leave it. i have a friend who usually leaves her door unlocked until recently when someone came in and stole her friend's wallet. even when im in studio and i am going to leave my computer on my desk, i lock it to my desk...even though it would be pretty obvious if you had my computer since im the only one with a hot pink case :)

cornell is just like everywhere else. just be smart and responsible about your things and youll be fine. havent gotten anything stolen yet knocks on wood

got my bike stolen...miraculously found it. I was walking to the gym w/ a friend and i happend to see my bike parked around the gym.

But, i would bet that it is almost impossible to find your computer, wallet, etc back. So, I would lock up the room when you leave. Actually, administrators here encourage you to lock the room whenever you leave.

plus I think non-Cornell students can gain access to libraries...
Regardless, I think it's always good to use common sense despite the fact that it's Cornell. For example, when I was at Stanford Summer college, some kid had his bike stolen. The Stanford Police were like "there's a lot of bike stealing going on all the time, so watch out."

Stanford is notorious for bike theft....

Freshmen year, I left my door either wide open or unlocked all the time when I went to the lounge to study or watch TV or something, but I lived in a sort of closed off suite with 5 other girls who were usually around anyway and who I trusted completely to keep an eye out for sketchy people. I never had anything stolen, although I usually carried my laptop around when I studied. If you live on an open hallway, I would def lock your door when you leave the room just in case. The only time that I really left my stuff lying around was in the dining halls when we used to put our stuff at a table before going to get food. Usually when I'm at the libe and have to get up to use the bathroom or something, I just ask whoever is sitting next to me to watch my stuff, and that's fine. I think a lot of people get their stuff stolen when they leave it out on the benches in the locker room...not smart.

I think overall, Cornell is a lot safer than most other campuses, but of course you should have common sense.
