hahahahaha

UofC is a certified botanical garden. No joke.

So, it's beautiful.

That statue forms a hammer-and-sickle shadow on the ground every May Day. It used to be in front of the Economics building, but it had to be moved after the Economics people found that out... heh heh. > : )

Not as beautiful as you, lucious lips.

...........um

hahahahaaa

too awkward?

It was the "lucious lips" that set me over the edge...haha.

I could see why.

./shrug gambadent - I'm just confused how you wouldn't think it was a walking city...

I'm going to have to agree with neverborn in that it is a walking city. I live there, so trust me, trying to drive in Chicago is a nightmare and a half.

compared to other major cities (new york, london, etc.) it's just not as pedestrian friendly. Of course you can walk, and traffics not great- it's still alot more common for people to drive than else where.

Driving in Chicago has become a nightmare, the major means of getting around that makes any sense is CTA and walking. The near north up past Wrigglyville is quite nice to walk, but not this time of year. As is Lincoln Park, the Zoo area, Lincoln Ave., etc.

Just from the first link...

"Myths aside, Chicago really does have frats. Look here and see what sort of debauchery ensued the night before."

I don't know if that was supposed to be a joke or not, because all I saw was one knocked-over lawn chair and a bottle of beer.

I think he was referring to http://dougspaulding.tripod.com/frat.JPG , but I can see why it was more of a joke.

Found this a couple of days ago:
http://home.uchicago.edu/~samgill/pics.html

Not that many good pictures, but there are a couple about the dorms and stuff.

O.K. I've got to chime in here. I lived several years of my childhood and adulthood in Hyde Park. I bundled up and walked everywhere. I took the CTA and Metra (used to be called Illinois Central) to downtown and northside. Driving is much worse than it used to be but still much more doable than NYC. I have driven all over the city and suburbs due to jobs and friends. I loved driving down Lake Shore Drive with the windows open and catching the breeze and seeing the downtown skyline.

Now for embarrassment - the frat in that photo is my S's frat (BS '05) and yes it is much like Animal House! When I would go visit him at U of C, I could barely step inside there. They did do many updates to it in summer 2004. He loved it though and lives with two frat mates (graduated a year earlier) in NYC now and they all have great jobs and are enjoying NYC life (when they're not working which takes up many hours!!). BTW, frats make up only about 8% of student life. I think U of C experience was very special to him because his g'parents live in the neighborhood who he regularly visited. He made friends for life there and he has an entire U of C network in NYC. He has brought about 8 of them here to CT and they all seemed like great young people with bright futures. I am always impressed by Chicago students.

My 2nd S got into there but chose NYU. He likes it there very much and walks all over the place. Now we are looking for college for D. It's very possible that my D wouldn't make it in to U of C. She is smart but not a great test taker and I don't think she would appreciate the intellectual atmosphere there. They would probably be interested in her soccer abilities though. I guess we should do the official tour at U of C anyway.

U of C is more beautiful than ever, I think, with all the flowers and plantings. I'm not crazy about the architecture of the Max P dorms. The interiors are great though.

Too funny, Peacemaker. Of course, dorm rooms aren't always pristine either. Doesn't seem to affect kid's future success (thank heavens). Best wishes with your D's college quest!

For those visiting campus the next couple of months, if students appear to be a little nervous and paranoid, it's not the academics. There are some heavy duty rounds of Assassin being played on campus. You may find a whole lot of water pistol packing students. They play hard and smart, lay traps, and form unholy alliances, ...watch your back.

Oh boy, idad....my S is going to love it. He already can't wait. Spent his OWN $ buying a T and sweatshirt from the bookstore. He's jazzed. When he hears about "Assassin" he'll be on cloud 9.

Ohio_Mom - thanks for the best wishes.

idad - I haven't experienced that yet on campus. That is funny!
