Camras and Duchossois Scholarship Deadlines - December 1, 2013

The deadline for applications for the Duchossois Leadership Scholars and the Camras Scholars programs at Illinois Institute of Technology is December 1, 2013.

Candidates for Camras Scholarships are selected by the Admissions Office from the completed IIT applications as of December 1 and are invited to submit an additional essay and letters of recommendation and to attend interview "weekend" in February 2014.

The Duchossois Scholarship is a highly selective, full tuition, room and board scholarship which has a focus on outstanding academics and leadership. Full applications for this program, including essays and letters or recommendation must be complted by December 1, 2013. Top applicants will be invited to campus for an interview "weekend" in February, 2014.

The Duchossois Leadership Scholarship program is unique in that students have a close mentoring relationship with the two endowed Duchossois Professors as well as regular contact with the donor, Craig Duchossois.

Successful applicants will be asked to participate in leadership activities throughout their time at IIT and each student will have a summer educational experience after their first year of studies. In summer of 2012, the Duchossois Scholars and Professors, attended the Engineering Leadership Conference in Adelaide, Australia followed by a 4 day stay in Sydney including a visit to the University of New South Wales. In the summer of 2013, the Duchossois Scholars participated in an Earthwatch institute organized expedition near Pisa, Italy.

Hi -
I am a parent of a strong student at a highly competitive high school. He is interested in iit for computer science, and he took summer courses there last year. With a 29 or 30 ACT and a strong history of student leadership and gpa, would he be likely to be invited to the scholarship weekend at iit? He has great “people skills” and loves to work with other students from varying backgrounds.
thanks

My daughter attended scholarship weekend. I’d say work on improving the ACT scores. She scored a 33 and her overall impression was that the other attendees were in that range or above. She met lots of very bright and interesting kids during her visit, both current and potential future students. IIT does offer other scholarships as well. Best wishes to your son.

I agree with @Parentof2014grad on the ACT scores. While they are not the only reason for getting an invitation, it will help to have them a bit higher. The university usually extends invitations to the top 25% or so of applicants and our average ACT composite is about 29-30 or so.

How selective is the Camras scholarship?

It varies from year to year. Anywhere from 15% to 20% of the interviewees are made offers.

When and how do you think the students who interviewed will be notified? I heard that there were 211 students who interviewed and that about 60 scholarships will be awarded. I don’t know how accurate that information is though.

Last year my daughter received a letter in the mail about 2-1/2 weeks after scholarship weekend. A small envelope with big news, so don’t throw anything away without reading it.

@DeAnn03 - Those numbers are about right but I don’t know the exact figures.

Did she get a full tuition scholarship?

Yes she did. She’s attending and loves it so far. She especially enjoys the small classes–all her professors know her, the diversity and multicultural environment, being in the city of Chicago. Really, we are impressed so far with her experience at IIT.

That is nice to hear!

We’ve followed your very helpful posts for some time. Will you post/start a thread regarding Heald and University scholarships as well? http://admissions.iit.edu/undergraduate/finances/first-year-scholarships
My son will be a high school senior next year (public magnet school not in Illinois), loves Chicago, has kept IIT in his top 5 choices, and has well beyond the minimum scores and leadership requirements mentioned in prior posts. More information on College Confidential would help us persuade some interested parties that IIT --for this student–trumps big name schools. Thanks!

OK, I can do that. The Heald Scholarships are offered to many of our incoming First Year students. My understanding (and I am not in the Admissions Office making these decisions) is that every applicant is considered for this merit award. As a private university our nominal tuition is high, however 95% of our students receive some scholarship grants from the university. The published statistics indicate that the average amount is slightly above 50% of the tuition. The Heald Scholarships are one such mechanism.

The University Scholarships are awarded at the same time as the Camras, Duchossois, and Crown Scholarships to students who attend Scholarship weekend. IIT chooses those applicants who are invited to attend each year. Typically they are the top 25% of applicants at the December 1 deadline.

I am happy to answer any questions I can about these.

Hello Everyone!

I wanted to jump into the thread and offer up myself to see if anyone has some additional questions. I’m a counselor at Illinois Tech and would be happy to answer those for you.

The announcement for the results from this year’s Scholarship Weekend will be available very soon, so if you are waiting to hear please know that it will be coming shortly.

Glad to hear that we have some current IIT parents on the forums with us & happy to hear that things are going well for your daughter!

In regards to the other schoolarships available @xraymancs is correct, we consider everyone who applies for a merit based award at the time of admission.

If anyone has any other questions please let us know!

Nothing in the mail today. Did anyone get a scholarship letter from I.I.T. today? Just wondering if they students who didn’t get the scholarship would be notified at the same time.

I don’t think letters have gone out yet. I believe everyone who attended will get a notification at the same time.

My S got an e-mail that the letters were mailed yesterday. We are from the Chicago area which is why I was expecting something in the mail today.

They might have been mailed in the evening at the Campus Post Office. Likely you will get the letter on Monday. I hope it is good news! Frankly, All the students I interviewed this year were outstanding and I wish they would all come…

Hello everyone, the letters were mailed in the afternoon on Friday, so you should expect those this week.
