Can a Bad ACT writing score have a significant impact on your application?

Hey Guys, I just got my ACT results. I took the test for the first time in Oct and I was pleasantly surprised at my composite score (35). However, I was soon stunned at my remarkably low writing score of 7. Particularly because I thought I wrote an essay worthy of at least a 9. Could it be my small writing? (usually fit 15-19 words per line)

I already applied to dartmouth and i'm planning on applying to other top schools. Would this score have a serious impact on my application?Should I retake the test?

Those with experience submitting applications to top schools.... please help me....

BTW, I will be majoring in engineering/ physics

First of all, 7 is not a “remarkably low” writing score. Is it low? At selective colleges yes, but it’s not out of an acceptable range, especially given your very impressive composite score.
They ask for the ACT with writing for a reason; however, it’s unclear how much weight it plays in admissions. It’s probably just used as a check. After all, adcoms know the ACT graders probably spend a minute most grading your essay. I doubt it’ll be a reason for rejection anywhere.
Also, the writing score is even less relevant if you want to go into engineering/physics.
