Can a college student apply as freshman applicant?

Hey guys!

I have already enrolled in a college and my classes are starting in two weeks. I applied to few colleges in US, UK and Hong Kong last year. I didn't get anywhere in US because I rushed my apps in just a week. I still want to go to a US univ, preferably HYPSM. Since transfer application is very very competitive for international students, I was thinking of applying as freshman applicant again but I dont want to take a gap year. I know this works for UK univs and univs in other countries, but is it allowed to a college student to apply as freshman applicant in US univs (particularly HYPSM)?

You can’t attend classes and then apply for Sept 2012 as an entering freshmen.

But that works for other univs e.g. many of my friends have gone to Oxford or NUS as freshmen after attending another college for a year :(

It doesnt work that way in the US. Period.
