Can a major in Human Development lead to med school???

Hey guys I am a junior in high school so I will soon be starting the process of college admissions. I was curious if I could get any info if Human Development is a major offered in UVA because I tried looking on their majors offering and didn't know which category this would fall in?? If Human Development is not a major, which major in your opinion would be the closest to this field???

My goal is to become a pediatrician, but I was wondering, if taking Human Development as my Major would hurt my chances for med school because I took a non science major. The thing is I really like Human Development and feel I can excel in it compared to other majors..

Any advice would be greatly appreciated..

You can major in WHATEVER you want. The only thing you need to get into medical school is a high gpa, a high MCAT score, and you must fulfill the pre-requisites required by most medical schools.

What you major in doesn’t matter. In actuality, medical schools like applicants who are (were) non-science majors.

I don’t know if UVA has a HD major in specific, but we do have a great psych department, and if your gpa is >=3.4 (which it will need to be for med school, huh) you can actually design your own major and you could create a human development major that way.

Even I learned something today. Thanks for that info, Hazel!

yeah, [Interdisciplinary Major Program — Undergraduate, College of Arts & Sciences, U.Va.](http://artsandsciences.virginia.edu/college/awards/imp.html)
I knew a girl pre-med who did “Diseases in Developing Countries” or something to that effect. A mesh of bio, anthropology, and bioethics maybe? Sounded cool. I considered making one but the 5 year ed program doesn’t allow for that scheduling wise.

Thanks for the info
i was also wondering how demanding is this major? Because i want to have time to minor is something relating to physics

i think that doing pre-med reqs, an interdisciplinary major, and a physics minor is pretty ambitious. you might also change your mind about any of those things. i know a kid doing human biology and pre-med stuff, and he is okay. but with a minor i don’t know how that would go. i think you’d just have to try it out and see if it is too much for you or not.
