Ok, so I really want to go to UT Austin!!! but the only problem is I don't have money to pay for room and board. My parent's EFC is 0, so I did get good financial aid, but not enough. I was wondering if I worked part time each semester, then would I be able to pay for room and board. I know UT's room and board starts around $8000, but my financial aid package covers one semester's housing and full tuition. So is it possible that I would be able to cover room and board for spring???

It would all depend on how many hours you work and your salary - and don’t forget you have to balance that with your schoolwork. I am sure that people have done it, but you will have to work a lot, so be prepared.

It also depends on your job. Prostitution might cover it. Waitressing probably not.

They say stripping is an excellent way to pay your way through college.

hahha lets just talk legal here: no prostitution; no drug dealing; and no stripping even though thats technically not illegal. but honestly, if my salary is $8 and if I work 15-20 hours every week for the whole year shouldn’t that cover it though? oh goshh i’m screwed!

Not to rain on your parade but you cannot make $8000 a semester at a part time $8/hr job. Do the math - $8 x 20 hours a week x 15 weeks a semester is only $2400. Two semesters is $4800. You aren’t even close, and that’s assuming you spend NONE (which is unrealistic, you will need to buy shampoo and ramen noodles and that sort of thing). It will certainly help, but you’ll need to find another source of money.

15-20 is also a lot to work every week if you’re a freshman unfamiliar with the workload of college. My advice would be to get a 10-12 hr/week job and see how that works for you, and take out a loan for the rest. Unfortunately if you have no other way of getting any money, loans are the only way you’ll be able to pay.

no, no, wait I looked at their housing for spring 2011 and it is $4092. I only need to make that amount because I need to cover my housing for one semester, not for the whole year. $8000 was just an estimate amount for their housing for the entire year which like you said is impossible to make per semester. But, I guess still I can’t work a lot because my GPA cannot suffer!

Yeah, and you still wouldn’t make enough. It’s okay to get a loan, you know - and a loan of $4000 or less won’t be too awful. Just get a part time job with a reasonable amount of hours - if nothing else, for the pocket money you’ll surely want in school.

Let’s recheck that math: $4800 < $4092? If OP stuck to his intended work schedule, he would make enough to cover one semester’s housing with a little over $700 left, in theory.

There are plenty of jobs that pay well over minimum wage. Waiting at an upscale restaurant may be a good option. If you haven’t worked in the food industry before, there’s still several months before school starts in the fall.
