Can a personal struggle seem too "dramatic" for a essay?

My friend is applying to UVA and wants to write about his problems he has faced with stuttering through out his high school years and how that has led him to value writing as a medium to communicate to people.

He doesn't know if this is a little over the top because he doesn't want to give a fake voice to the admissions officers...i told him that the essay would be great if he truly sticks to his struggles and how he was coped with them rather than make it dramatic

advice would be greatly appreciated...(i am looking at you Dean J) :)

While I personally don’t know anything about your friend’s struggles, it would be detrimental to the applicant to submit a depressing sob story if I’m not mistaken.

I’ve definitely read a few stuttering essays. I wouldn’t say that topic itself is overly dramatic. How someone writes about something can be overly dramatic. Some people have a “gift” for writing that way about simple, everyday topics. :)

thanks Dean J…i will make sure i tell my friend that
