I know that the colleges can take the highest SAT score for each section of the test. But what about the ACT? I heard that you can't split the score with the ACT. However, can the writing portion be split? Suppose I took the ACT once w/o writing, and the second time I took it with the writing. However, I somehow got a lower composite the second time around, can I use the writing score from the second time with the first composite?

This hopefully won't happen to me, but I just want to make sure of this policy so I'll be less stressed with the outcome of the test.

I looked over the website, and it seems like ACT can only send scores from one test date…too bad
Janelle: what do you mean? Can I send scores from two test dates(two separate score reports) and then the school can decide if they want to split the scores?

Most schools will only take the best sitting but some willl take the best combined. There was a list a while ago (I think on College Search and Selection) that said which schools accepted multiple dates. I’d assume you’d send two score reports, but I don’t know. The majority of schools only take the best sitting, though

Most schools say they don’t superscore. I would call the schools you’re applying to and ask them. You should always take it with the writing as many schools will require the writing portion. Lzhang, did you take the test twice? You can send all the reports, it’s just that you have to put separate orders in and pay for each one. Think carefully about your strategy in what you send. Make sure you know what each school you’re applying to requires.

I’m about to take the test a second time in October. So I will send both scores only if my first ACT score is better than the second time-which hopefully won’t be the case.

since the first one doesn’t have the writing section. This is only supposing that the school actually can look at the writing section separately so.

Keep in mind that while it might be worth sending both, if they REQUIRE writing they MAY totally disregard the 1st score! Hopefully you will stay the same or improve. Care to share which sections you’re trying to improve on?
