i know wat u mean....I go to HS in NoVA and I dnt know how I will adjust to a school with many southern students (I am applyin to a vandy, uva, emory).....

But I heard that MANY NoVA students get in (28 from my school alone last year), so I guess that will help ease the transition?

I also heard the MSA there is really strong and has alot of fun activities (btw, I am muslim)

Maybe I am being over-sensitive, but why do I have to apologize for being a white Christian male who just happens to live in VA? Just who are the racist bigots here? If the South is so bad, why consider UVA? Why not go to school in NY or CA and not have to deal with awful southerners?

I'm asian, but I have grown up in a probably 90% white community. I don't care about diversity and how many asians there are at the school. What I would like to know is how accepting is UVA? Do you see many different types of people walking around campus together or are there only groups of asian/groups of white people/groups of hispanics together? I recently visited BC and i saw almost no interaction between races.. i was disappointed. Also I grew up around the Atlanta area (now in PA). Is VA anything like that area?

I think that you'll feel more racially segregated and out of place if you were Black then if you were Asian. From my observation and the events that have occurred, Black students tend to be discriminated against more so than other minorities.

Oh, I'm not asking because I'm unfamiliar with what was reported a few years ago, I'm asking because I'm curious whether or not you were referring to something else.

Frankly, I was quite pleased with President Casteen's response to those past incidents, and I think UVA has gone out of its way to promote tolerance and diversity.

I thought perhaps you had a different perspective about something more current. Otherwise, I'd say it's pretty much a non issue.

President Casteen's response will not solve racial discrimination at UVA. Rather, he had to make such a statement so that UVA's reputation is not jeopardized any further.

err i definitely discerned racial barriers when i was there. i mean, everyone is friendly/polite to each other, but cliques exist.

the irc (international dorm) is great, however. in my friend's humble opinion (as an irc resident) it's the best dorm at uva, and racially, it's like those lame posters in our spanish class labeled "CELEBRATE DIVERSITY!" i think anyone can find his or her niche, definitely.

Aceit, I'm wasn't referring to his statements, but his actions. It may have been before your time.

Frankly, I percieve there are no more racial problems existing at UVA than any other campus, and far less compared to many. And yes, many Asians enjoy UVA as do people from several other walks of life.

Nor have I observed any "barriers" other than some self-segregation, which again, seems prevalent on most campuses.

^ Agreed. I'm an Asian American and so I feel I'm qualified to speak on this subject. =P There is plenty of self segregation, and even more segregation within the bigger group. Most notable are Koreans and Japanese sticking together. But this will happen on any campus, and people always flock to others from similar culture and language just because in this sea of faces, it's much easier to adjust to college if you have something in common already with someone. Of course cliques exist, point out a place where cliques exist and I'll happily eat my laptop. It's a part of life.

As regards to punk/goth/non-prep.. they will certainly be visually out of place, because I don't think many dress that way here. If there are people I must have missed it. If they can get over the discomfort factor of sticking out like a sore thumb, there's no reason they wouldn't unless they're misanthropes as well. I have friends from all walks of life, it's your personality that'll make or break a friendship.

Just because you're Asian American, it doesn't mean you're qualified to speak on it. I think non-Asian Americans are also able to attest to the racial tension that is quite prevalent here.

There's no racial tension to speak of. Stop being intentionally argumentative about things you can't support. Either that or provide some evidence along with your assertions.

There's plenty of occurrences to support my assertion. Even any student who has been here for quite some time can point that out. I'll give you an example where, recently, there was a noose that was drawn on one of the tables in a classroom. This happened fair recently this year.

Oops, meant to say point out a place to me where cliques don't exist and I'll happily eat my laptop.

Well aceit, good for you that you like your opinions. Your writing style reminds me of another person almost universally detested on this board. =)

aceit, like I said, if you are going to make an assertion, support it. Random anecdotal tales of "sketches" substantiates nothing except that you're grasping at straws.
