Can an Asian American Enjoy UVA?

<p>Here' the link. I'm posting it because I think it proves my point much better than it supports aceit. It proves that UVA's administration is extremely responsive even to the most minor incidents. </p>

<p>So now you're diverting from my point huh, FLVADAD? The administration's response is a separate issue. And as always, when incidents like this happen, schools usually issue some kind of formal response as an action of formality.</p>

<p>While this article is fairly old, it provides a good insight on racial discrimination at UVA. There are plenty of racial incidents here and I'm sure you can google them. <p>Thanks for the links. Was the question about whether or not there has ever been a racist incident at UVA, or was it that UVA fosters a racist environment where there is racial tension? I don't dispute incidents of racism. Those are never hard to find. I'm disputing that there exists a racist culture at UVA. Considering it's a public university, the fact you have to go back five years to find any issues of significance is a positive.</p>

<p>Your questions are irrelevant, because these racial incidents has unquestionably created racial tension in UVA. Until these incidents do not occur again, the tension will still linger in this community and the consequence, as ehuinno has noted, is the little interaction between races on this campus. I find this ironic as people always claim that UVA is diverse...</p>

<p>If you read the author of Ethiopian food fight's response to the supposed racist nature of the cartoon, he actually didn't mean that at all, and had been thoughtful in his attempt to portray a serious issue. The effectiveness of his attempt is in debate, but he gained much support in the community after his explanation. In fact, when the CD fired him several other cartoonists also quit in protest at his treatment. Personally, I know him as a friend and he's one of the least racist people I know. Perhaps it's the people I'm friends with, and certainly I wouldn't want to be friends with someone racist, but I have yet to encounter more than a normal amount of racial incidents on a school campus with such a large student body. So in my view, just because people of color like to clump together doesn't make a school any less diverse. Racial interaction will always be a problem at any location, but just because folks like to stick with those of their own culture doesn't mean there's a complete lack of racial interaction.</p>

<p>Define "stick with those of their own culture"? If by that you mean racial segregation, then of course there's lacking racial interaction. </p>

<p>So in your definition, diversity only plays with the numbers of minority students? I think diversity is pointless if we see very little interaction. In fact, it defeats the purpose of diversity. I think that's why this term is kind of problematic anyway.</p>

<p>To get rid of all incidents of racism at UVA or any college campus, you must get rid of racism in society. Collegiate life is a microcosm of society. There will always be those who have their preconceived notions and prejudices of others. I think it's unfair to say that there's more racism at UVa than other campuses, because racism can be found in all campuses - both subtle and explicit. A couple of years ago, there was a huge uproar about a string of anti-Semitic and racist incidents at Columbia, an Ivy League school in New York City - the most diverse city in America.</p>

<p>I think the true test of character is not based on what happens to you, but how you react. And that can be said also with institutions. When a racist incident happened 3 years ago on Grounds, what was UVA’s reaction? The entire school acted energetically and transparently against racism - meaning instead of trying to railroad or conceal anything that might damage UVA's image, the University community instead stood up and made public the incidents as well as its outrage - from rallies & vigils, to President Casteen making a video decrying all intolerance, to student organizations and the Faculty Senate making public declarations of condemnation, to the Alumni Association offering money to bring the culprits to justice, to students painting Beta Bridge, wearing black t-shirts instead of orange ones at football games as well as wearing black ribbons around Grounds - ALL THIS - to say that racism has no place at UVa.</p>

<p>Also, yes, you can have an amazing time as an Asian at UVA. I loved it when I was there...still do...and always will.</p>

<p>I'm an Asian and hopefully I'll be at UVA this coming fall (08'), and I've always felt fine when I visit. I have friends there who are Caucasian and would never treat any other race unfairly. </p>

<p>Just because TJ mentioned that quote doesn't mean that every man and woman in this university have been treated equally. The fact that he used "men" to include both males and females is a sexist term. The university did not start admitting women until relatively recently.</p>

I don't know why, but it really seems you want others to believe a greater problem exists than actually does, and your reasoning is hard to follow. I suppose you have your reasons, but I'm not going to spend anymore time going back and forth with you about it. I think it's pretty evident at this point that your claims are way overstated. </p>

<p>Is this a joke? UVA isn't in the south! I don't care if Richmond was the capital of the CSA. It is hardly like Alabama or Georgia!</p>

<p>^ agreed, UVA has a lot of northern virgininian students. Even within virginia there is a clear difference between Northern VA and Southern VA.</p>
