asians in the south

i've already posted two other threads today, but i just joined and i have so many questions (:

i just read a post by an untitled member about racism at william & mary. is there a lot of racism against asians in southern schools or just certain ones? do you guys know of specific schools where asians may be uncomfortable?

i am seriously considering applying to unc chapel hill, uva, duke, and emory. as a vietnamese student, do you think i would have a problem at any of these schools or any other schools in the south?

i know this may be a sensitive issue but i'd love you hear your opinions.

I know Duke and Emory have significantly higher asian populations than most of the other southern schools. One of my friends went to Duke last year (he's Chinese), and two other ones (both male and chinese) are going there this fall. The one who's been there a year already loves the school and feels very comfortable there. So I'm pretty sure you'll be fine at Duke. I hear Emory also has relatively diverse student body with 17% asian. But I'm not so sure about the other schools like Vanderbilt, UNC, UVA, and William and Mary. I hear some bad things about them with regards to diversity and racism.

njchino371..................................You've "heard" incorrectly. Why would southern schools be any more or less racist that anywhere else. Especially with respect to asian students? Give me a break. On one hand they want their URM status to help their application, on the other hand they wonder if they'll be discriminated against. UNC, UVA and William and Mary are all top notch schools with students of high quality. William and Mary prides itself on a very accepting student body...................This information is just incorrect and has no basis of truth. Certainly a larger school depending on it's location will have a more diverse student body. But to imply that a particular school in the south is not accepting of URM students because the majority of their students are not URM......................I mean, this is America!

Right. It's America. In other words, there are plenty of racist people around, and if you put enough of them together in one school, it can make things uncomfortable for a minority student. It's perfectly reasonable to be concerned about whether Asian students are made to feel uncomfortable at a given list of schools. Perhaps the answer is "no" in this case, but it is very sensible to ask.
