She ended up at Smith.

Hey, WM! That was a closely guarded secret!

Nancy, what are your major interests? Hmm...I just looked at your OP and that's quite a bit of diversity in your choices. TheMom is a director-level manager at UCLA and has worked there for more than a quarter century (it sounds so long when you put it that way) and it's very good school but very different than Wellesley/Smith. Both TheMom and I started out being biased towards larger reseach universities and had our minds changed through the search/application process. There are some interesting trade-offs but I think that you can have more net opportunities at an LAC. Certainly my D wouldn't have had the opportunities she's had if she had gone to Yale, which was her EA choice (not admitted). I've often heard that Scripps is the Smith of the West Coast, by intention.

D is almost deliriously happy at Smith, said that she can't imagine having gone anywhere else. She is, though, in the "happy but tired" camp...picked up a take-home Math final yesterday...she had clocked 27 hours working on the mid-term (lowest in the class was 21) and this looks to be worse.

i can't believe you got deferred ED. your stats are so much more amazing than mine, and i'm applying EE.

good luck to you, i know you'll do well wherever you decide to go. on an unrelated note, tiredpapa's name is cute.

It's hard to compare stats and try to decide who might and might not get in. The board of admissions looks at more than numbers and extra-curricular involvement. I can't be much more specific than that, having never been part of the admissions process, but there are times when comparisons don't help anyone. It's a jittery time, certainly, but don't forget that you've all offered different circumstances, statements of intent, and personalities to the board of admissions.

Best of luck to all of you, no matter where the college search might take you.

Well, my D was deferred. She has an ace up her sleeve though and is using it. She managed 760 in both of her SAT IIs, which had not been part of her original application for reasons beyond her control. Also, the funny thing is that two other great colleges are actually beating down her door to get her to apply (not counting the six or so major ones where she is a shoe-in). She is heading back to Wellesley, though, as her No1 choice. We'll see, but things are still looking promising. Merry Christmas (or is it Happy Holidays?) everyone.

Good luck to your daughter. And I think it doesn't matter either way. I don't know anyone who really gets offended when people say Merry Christmas instead of Happy Holidays.

Thanks toffee. I guess my point is that even if one is deferred, as others have been, that is not the end of it. In the rarified academic air of Wellesley, a deferral is no condemnation. A deferral probably means that 95% of the universities and colleges in N. America would be happy to have you, including Ivies. I must say, though, the SATII scores D received has certainly increased her confidence and she is not disheartened.

Don't worry about it. I've been working pretty hard lately, bringing my GPA up and i'm taking my SAT II's again aswell. we'll all end up somewhere good. no worries
Nancy

Nancychen, thank you. This is a very small world at the level at which you and my D are looking. I hope the two of you meet at some time. Good luck with your efforts. Same goes for toffee and the others on this BB.
