So I'm a freshman in high school and I took the SAT in January. I found out that I got a score total of 1940 and...well... :/ I thought I would have been able to do much better considering I've already finished up to Algebra 2 and I'm in AP Stats now, I'm a pretty good writer and my reading comprehension skills have improved quite a bit. My parents were looking out for somewhere around 2300 but I knew that wouldn't have happened. I took this test without a single minute of prepping and I got 1940...my biggest fear is that I've forgotten so much of Algebra 2 and I hear that algebra 2 is the highest level of math that is tested on the SAT. I want to study intensively over the summer for the exam next year but I'm not sure exactly how to approach this. I've also been looking into the ACT as a possible alternative...can anyone offer some advice about that? Please help! How should I study? What can I do to resolve this debacle and be on my way to 2400 stardom? Also, please let me know if you believe that it is possible to improve now from a 1940 to 2400 at this point in time for me. Thanks to all!

You are a freshman and you took the SAT. That gives you two - three more years to improve. That’s a long time. Think about what students three years younger than you know now. We’re talking about 6th graders. Have you learned much since the 6th grade? Imagine making that same amount of progress in the next few years and THEN taking the SAT. Play your cards right and you should have little to worry about.

First of all, there is no point to take any test unprepared. You can do practice test to assess your level before preparation for a real test. Why waste your money?
Second, don’t worry too much you will forget your math skill. As long as you are doing practice, you will remember them. After all, what is the point of testing your math skill if you will forget by the time at college?

As a freshman, it is the best time to brush up your vocab. That cannot be done in a short period of time. Also, use this time to build up your EC. Improve from 1940 to 2300+ is not impossible even within a year.

Lack of Studying didn’t really come out of apathy, rather I just did not have enough time because of my intensive focus on my ECs. Do you think there is a specific way to prepare or should I start rushing into heavy prep right away or…??? I’m just super confused about why I got the score that I did get and how is the best way to improve. Also, with regards to vocab, I did a LOT of vocab prep over the summer before ninth grade…that helped quite a bit.
