Can anyone identify this quote's source?

"Moral excellence comes about as a result of habit. We become just by doing just acts, temperate by doing temperate acts, brave by doing brave acts"

It's from Aristotle, but I was wondering from which one of his books. If anybody knows that would be great :)

ARISTOTLE'S NICOMACHEAN ETHICS Book #2

Laxmom, I am amazed that you knew this.

Dumbstruck is what I am.

Wow, laxmom!

Very often, when you need to locate a quote source, just cut and paste and google it - usually you will find it.

I prefer to believe that laxmom had that information sitting in her brain....ready for retrieval at a moment's notice!

you guys are fast- I just figured it out- I was gonna suggest that you post on the Reed or Uchicago board
;)
Nicomachean Ethics
I know Reedies have this text in hum110

emerald: That they do. grin

PS: I'm just waiting for someone to say you become independent by doing independent acts -- like filling out your own apps. grin

I would have said that last year, but this year ... I'd say you become independent by doing your laundry more than once a month!

Oh no, real independent kids don't do laundry, their moms do it for them. It's only important stuff they do independently. cough cough

Thankfully, you can read Aristotle and do laundry at the same time.

Yup. I read it at the U of C second term for my humanities core, though some sections of hum probably don't read it.

Do you think Aristotle separated the whites from the colors at the greco-laundromat?

The question is, did Aristotle give his underage kid champagne or did he let him/her acquire same as an independent act?

I hear that when Aristotle's daughter came home for the holidays, she forgot to pack her dressy outfits, and left them at college, even though Ari had reminded her. I guess all that champagne put her in a stupor ;)

;)

10 characters

I had a roommate like that once. Forgot to bring her jeans back from Thanksgiving Break, opened her closet door, and wailed, "Oh, do you think I have enough clothes to last until Chirstmas?" (three weeks hence) You couldn't put a piece of paper in between the hangers in the closet. She had all those clothes because a) she didn't know how to do the laundry and b) she always spilled her beer/champagne/punch at the frat parties. :)

If I asked DS2 about greco-laundry, he'd say, "But Mom, don't you know they all ran around nude?" I think this is why he's interested in Reed. :D

I'd like to think Laxmom had the book on her bedside table for a little light reading. It would make me feel like I'm not alone in reading deep stuff late at night.

See?
It never changes.

Great quote! I'm going to cut that out and put it on my bathroom wall (where we hang all sorts of relevant/funny comics, editorial cartoons, pics of strange signs, etc.).
