Can B-ball Trump Admissions with Askewed Yield?

Last year the stats were:
Applicants: 3992
Acceptances: 1117
Enrollment: 467

That shows admissions of 28% and a yield of 42%. Both very respectable numbers.

Assuming the application numbers are relatively similar for this year's admissions office (which according to another thread herein will make a decision on March 27, 2008), and the school admits a similar number (around 1100), can this B-ball hype create a dramatic affect on the yield so as to make the class of 2012 the largest in the school's history? Admissions must have been having late night sessions dealing with very unique public relations event(s) to this otherwise relatively unknown school.

Think of the difference made in the short span of a few days. NCAA Sweet Sixteen on Sunday. CBS morning show on Thursday. And admissions shipping acceptances while CBS Morning show airs.

I admire the whole campus, but I am so happy I do not have to be entangled in this potential actuarial nightmare.

Go Cats. Good luck admissions.

I made a similar point on a different non-Davidson specific thread.

I'm sure this isn't the first time something like this has happened to a small school like DC and I'd assume the Admissions staff has reached out for advice from those who might have experienced something similar. But, as opposed to the affect on applications for Class of 2013 this is likely to have, dealing with an overabundant harvest could be a daunting challenge. Davidson had already increased the projected size of the Class of 2012 to 470 - resulting in some recent freshman housing/dorm gymnastics. It will be interesting to watch.

One thing seems for sure: this will not be a particularly good year for anyone relegated to waitlist status.

Go 'Cats!

I've been wondering the same thing myself - I was admitted last year but deferred my enrollment, so I'll be starting in the fall. I feel like they might've made some last minute changes, putting people from accepted to wait listed.. just to be safe...
Just so long as I have a place to live next year I'll be happy! It's so weird though, people in my hometown (Seattle) have suddenly heard of where I'm going to school.

My D chose Davidson in her school's b-ball pool because I've been telling her it would be a great place for her to consider in a couple of years. She's doing 70% in the pool (I assume everyone else chose Gonzaga, the local sweetheart - we're also from Seattle). She's beating out the truly basketball-obsessed, so it's a good laugh. But it won't be so fun for her if application numbers skyrocket by the time the Class of 2014 is applying! No! Please don't discover Davidson!

Since their huge football vistory over Michigan last fall (and their 3 consecutive national champioships), a similiar effect is occurring at Appalachian State Univ. here in NC. ASU was flooded with apps. this year. Lots of kids from our area who would have been shoo-ins for admission just a couple of years ago were deferred this year.
