Can Barnard students freely cross-register class with Columbia Engineering school?

I know Barnard students can cross-register classes with Columbia College. Can they also cross-register engineering classes? Is it possible for a Barnard student complete 3+2 program in 4 years? For example, complete BA in computer science from Barnard and BS in Compute Engineering from Columbia University in just 4 years. In other schools with both majors available, it is usually not hard to double major these two in 4 years. I think Barnard’s computer science major is actually from Columbia’s computer science department.

You can go to this web site to see all course offerings and who can enroll:
http://www.columbia.edu/cu/bulletin/uwb/

So from there you could look at the majors you are interested in and also look up the required courses to see whether you could enroll in what you need at SEAS.

For example, here’s a link to “Intro to Chemical Engineering” – with a course number E2100 -
so that tells us it is an undergrad course in the Engineering school

http://www.columbia.edu/cu/bulletin/uwb/subj/CHEN/E2100-20173-001/

Browse down the page to the part that says, “Open to:”

It says, “Engineering and Applied Science: Undergraduate” – that means that only students enrolled in SEAS can take that course, so no go.

Now here is another course called “Earth and Environmental Engineering E2100” – so different course, with equivalent course number (also open to undergrads)

http://www.columbia.edu/cu/bulletin/uwb/subj/EAEE/E2100-20173-001/

Same deal, browse the page:

“Open to: Barnard, Columbia College, Engineering and Applied Science: Undergraduate, General Studies”

So that course could be taken by Barnard, CC, and GS students as well as SEAS undergrads.

I think a 3+2 program is designed to be done in that time frame, and probably also includes graduate level courses.

However, Barnard is very generous with AP or IB credits and if you have racked up a lot in high school, you might be able to enter Barnard with a full year’s worth of credits. While not encouraged, it’s very possible for the 4 year program at Barnard to be completed in 3 years. So at least in theory a student who would have enough enough credits to give her junior standing in her second year might be able to apply:

From https://barnard.edu/stem/academics-advising/3-2-engineering

You can see what the required coursework would be for various engineering programs here - https://barnard.edu/dos/graduate-school

But it doesn’t look easy. You might be a lot happier if you choose to go to one of the other schools that you mentioned where it “usually not hard” to double major.

That is very helpful. Thanks.
