Can college FA offices correct your FAFSA?

I just received a notice that an update to our FAFSA was processed. I thought this odd, since we filed the final figures ten days ago and were already notified that they were processed. When I went to check, the correction history says that "College" made the correction (an adjustment to our earned income). Is this legitimate, or should I be concerned? Can colleges make corrections to your FAFSA when they review it?

Thank you.

yes, they can and they do.

Not only can, have to if they see an error.

Thank you!

Then all the other schools will see the correction that school made? Is there any way of knowing which school made the correction?

I am not sure how changes show up in the student’s side … but most likely, you will see a school code for the school that made the change (if you go to [Home - FAFSA on the Web-Federal Student Aid](http://www.fafsa.gov) and log into the FAFSA). I am not certain, though.

Yes, all schools on the FAFSA transaction that was corrected will see the correction.

Income from work is line 7 (+line 13, if you have business income). Often people report this incorrectly (I am not sure why …).

You noted that:

"Income from work is line 7 (+line 13, if you have business income). Often people report this incorrectly (I am not sure why …). "

I believe that business income is reported on line 12, not line 13. That aside, I am confused about the question of whether or not to include such business income as part of :income earned from work" (i.e. lines 86 and 87). I read elsewhere on this forum that
1099 income (i.e. business income) is NOT included on lines 86 and 87. Please advise. Thanks.

These are the instructions for income from work:

Business income is definitely included as income from work…hope that helps!

Sorry - typo. Yes, it’s line 12, not 13.

The 1099 amount is probably not the amount you are going to report. Your business income that you report is the amount on line 12 … which is 1099 less qualified expenses. If the amount on line 12 is negative, you treat it as 0.

Thank you, sk8rmom. Those instructions do seem quite clear, and I will follow them accordingly. I was distracted by some comments I read on another thread which raised questions about this item, but your referenced quote is clear. Thanks again.
