Can ESL be used as a reason for my low reading scores?

I was in ESL until I was 11 years old since both my parents were immigrants and this is often my reason for getting low test scores with anything reading/writing. I was wondering if that can be used not as an excuse but as a reason for my reading and writing scores being much lower than my math so that colleges can cut me some slack?

My SAT score is 1450 (800 on math and 650 on Reading/Grammar)

It’s possible, but college tend to be pretty tough with ESL applicants and English scores. I think it’s better to not try to explain your score.

Your SAT is not bad at all- a lot of kids that have been speaking English all their lives never get close to that score.

It would be better to have a test accommodation and get a longer time for the reading sections.

My scenario is strange tho because now I’m a fluent English speaker even though I was in ESL until I was 11. I don’t have an accent and speak English better than any other language. Could I still get a test accommodation like you described?

Since you’ve not been in ESL in a long time, you wouldn’t get accommodations and you can’t use that as a reason. You’ve had five years to work on reading and writing. Are you taking or did you take AP English language? Take reading intensive classes to improve your skills?

I took the AP Language test but got a 2.
