Can good college grades outweigh poor HS ones?

My friend and I are in a similar position. We both aren't very satisfied with our current colleges and are hoping to transfer for the fall 2009 semester.

I did absolutely horribly in High School. My GPA was about a 2.0 and my SAT 1810 with all three sections and a 1170 with just math and reading. I got into St. John's University though and my GPA is probably going to be around 3.4 or 3.5 (possibly better) by the end of the year. I also can definitely get a great recommendation from one of my current professors.

My friend had about 3.3 GPA in High School with 1460 combined SAT score and 1100 on math and reading alone. He ended up going to CUNY York and his college GPA is looking like a 3.3.

I have a few questions in regards to all of this. First of all, I know that a lot of the deadlines for the transfer applications are in february. Most of the schools I want to apply to say they won't look at high school grades if I have 24 or more college credits. By the time I am done in May, I will indeed have 24 college credits but the deadline is in february.

Will the schools wait for the term to finish or will I have to send them my High School transcript? Moreover, if I do, will they focus more on the college GPA and overlook the poor High School one?

Here is a list of the schools we are both considering

Stony Brook
Binghamton
BU
Northeastern
Syracuse
UMass
Pennstate
UConn

I understand that most of these are a stretch but these are schools we had wanted to go to but couldn't do to poor performances in High School. I don't want to turn this into a "What are my chances" post but are these considerable schools based on our previous grades?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

They are going to look at your high school records.

It never hurts (only maybe your pocketbook) to try. But understand that if you apply for Fall, they are not going to be able to see your final grades for the end of spring. If you think you're only going to be able to get 3.4-3.5 by the END of spring 08, you may want to work on getting your college grades a bit higher because that 2.0, which this will see, is not attractive at all.

yeah that 2.0 is not pretty - i wasn't horrible in HS - 3.0 - 3.3 - 2100 SAT 27 ACT - 4 varsity sports (3 - 2yr captain and 3 state titles) but i didn't get in where i wanted - Notre Dame - well i went to a small LAC and got a 3.92- was denied again for some reason ... even though i am legacy - but got into UMich, GT, BC, BU, GWU, Tulane, and nova. so eh, your friend maybe will be good with his/her grades. but yours will take at least till soph years to pull admin eyes away from HS.

I can most likely bring it above 3.5 but I know some schools(some SUNYs and CUNYs) will wait until the final transcripts are sent in to make their decision which is what I want. If they do that, then I will have a total of 24 credits and my High School grades won't be needed.

youre not going to be able to make your hs grades just dissapear for most schools, people think that they can all the time, but its usually just a myth

bring that gpa up to the 3.7+ range and put in two full years and youll have a shot at all of those schools...as it stands, not so much...if your applying this early in the process, hs record will be the biggest factor for transfer schools

Thanks a lot. I think I can definitely bring it up to around 3.7. The thing is I know the SUNYs will not request HS transcripts if I have a total of 24 college credits. The deadline for the SUNY schools is in February but my term ends in May. Do you think they'll hold my application for a few months so I have time to finish the term?
