Since I submitted my app in dec, I cannot seem to stop myself from worrying about whether I'll get in. gah! My biggest worry is my SAT subject scores: 540 spanish (i'm asian and in ap spanish lang) 640 chem and 690 math ii.

My regular sat score was 2200 (800cr, 710 m, 690 wr) if that helps with anything.

But aside from scores, I worked harder on Penn's supplie's more than any other college, making sure to answer the prompt, keeping an active voice, and maintaining my quirkiness. heh heh i even dared to add stacking golf balls and bowling balls on the common app's additional info/resume section. hopefully that wasn't a bad move -___-"

so my question is, are essays worth more than sat subject scores? just for a peace of mind. I'm applying to CAS.

I dont know man Im worried about that also, my SAT IIs are really bad 600 spanish, 670 math II (idk how that happened, i must have been high or smthing) but Im applying to Cornell so I dont know how important they are. I really want to get in, but I just hope they wont be my downfall, other than that I think Im solid on everything else

Haha same here except im in ib spanish, like im good at spanish I understand everything in class I guess its the vocab that killed me on the subject test. Stupid collegeboard I hate them so much haha.

Essays are very important and considered more important than test scores according to common data set. Having said that though I am not sure how much they can compensate for average SAT scores.

^im currently ranked one out of like 658 kids or so… with a 3.96 gpa as of last year… will that help negate the negative sat subject score effects?

its already a relief to hear that essays are considered more important than test scores! whew!

I definitely think the essays can! My friend got into Harvard EA with a 2180 SAT, and he’s not a legacy, or a URM, or an athlete. He devoted 3 months to perfecting his essays–making the topics unique, ensuring each essay illustrated a different part of him, etc.

@neorobie: He did do research at MIT. But remember, that one thing won’t get you in. Admissions into these top universities, including Penn, is having a nice package of excellence, not just 1 top thing.

hardworking21: that’s significant!! I want to be a doctor (major in Bio) and the only thing I’ve done in that type of direction is volunteer at a hospital. most of my non-academic awards if not all (none out of the state) are all photography related. so ya… not much weight there… at least it may play into the well-rounded factor maybe?

I’m going to be a nervous wreck come March 29th. -___-"

@neorobie: Good luck! Hope you’re a fellow Class of 2016 Quaker And trust me, I know the feeling. My Mac crashed from 5-5:05 PM EST the day of the ED Results and I was FREAKING OUT. Like I threw a pillow against the wall in nervousness.

Thanks hardworking21! I hope so too! Gosh, I really hope my computer doesn’t crash, wow! thank goodness you got accepted! I’m really not sure what to do for checking for RD results. Is the server going to crash? Should I aim at trying to get in a 5pm? Should I be already logged on by then? And how long do you stay signed in to the portal?

To see for yourself that essays are more important than gpa or SAT scores, please google “Penn common data set.” THis document is 38 pages long. Go to page 8 and it will show you how PENN ranks all the components of an application, including essays, teacher recs, extra curricular, etc.

Let me know what you think after reviewing.

wow! That document is very interesting! I compared it to Harvard and harvard is so vague -considered for almost everything but class rank and religion.

I can almost guarantee rejection from harvard lol

but penn at least they consider class rank and of course as pennforme, you pointed out essays are worth more as well as GPA so that’s a huge plus. lol I have hope.

@neorobie: You should be able to get on within like 10-15 minutes of 5 PM EST. My internet can be a bit slow at times. The portal will NOT crash—it shouldn’t, at least. They usually disable other parts of the Penn Admissions website so more of the server can feed the admissions portal (to prevent the portal’s crash).

I would but I’m paranoid! xD But in my Penn supplement, I really made sure to include all sorts of information that showed I truly put in effort to know Penn and how I will fit in, in a unique essay format. In the optional get to know yourself, it was very unique, quirky, funny at first, then more serious. My CommonApp essay was very thought out(or at least I thought so xD) It was about a childhood experience, an obstacle and the way of overcoming that obstacle with ironic juxtapositions of phrases. Plus repetition of a certain phrase to lead the reader to expect something is going to happen again -but it doesn’t. It’s thanks to AP lang for all these rhetorical techniques. In the end though, I explained how this experience led me to decide my career goals.
