Hello everyone. So recently, becauase of a job change and lack of money, I have become homeless. I was not able to afford my monthly rent and couldn’t work out a paymwnt plan with the apartment complex. I was served an eviction notice and turned in my keys. I don’t have any family close to me except for my mother who is estranged and I have been unable to contact. I have a friend that let’s me stay with her some nights, but because she lives with her family and the space is already tight. Luckily, my job is open 24/7 and has a locker room. So I am able to shower and take naps in the bathroom. It’s a pretty big place so no one notices what I’m doing. The problem is that my grades have suffered because of my current situation. I’ve missed a few assignments and this has caused my grades to drop. I did reach out to my professors and tell them my situation, but they were unable to extend any deadlines or give any makeup opportunities. I calculated my what if grades and I know I will be failing one class. This will affect my financial aid and suspend it. My question is, do you guys think I have a strong case for an appeal? I was honestly doing fine in my classes until this happened. I don’t want to bring it up because I am ashamed and embarrassed, but I’m not sure what else to do. Thanks for any advice.
Your university should have services through the counseling and social work services for students. The professors can’t change your deadlines until someone from the university speaks to them on your behalf.
Don’t be ashamed of being homeless. Many students are in your situation and suffer silently.
Believe it or not, your fees pay for those services. Use them. Good luck!
In California State universities, one in ten students are homeless .
Go tomorrow talk to financial aid office (an actual officer, not a student worker) ; to the dean of students for your class or your college; the social services. Make that a priority.
See if you can get an extension for family/personal emergency. Being suddenly homeless should definitely be taken into account.)
They’ll be able to contact the professors.
As for now: is there a 24/7 diner in town, where you can spend time till the library opens and you can sleep there?
From a practical standpoint, try to sleep in the library where there should be big couches.
If you have friends in the dorm, ask if you can crash on a couch lounge from time to time.
However services at your college should be able to find ways to help you.
I actually do all if my classes online. The college I’m enrolled at is a bit far, plus I don’t have a car. Sleeping at work isn’t too awful, though it’s not the most comfortable. I will defintely speak to my advisors about this. Thank you.
Yes, the profs might be more willing to accommodate you if they knew you were in contact with student services or whoever helps students in need.
