Can I be in Ross Dual Degree and be pre med?

Can I be like a finance major through the program while still taking pre med courses?

Thank you!

pre-med isn’t a major, so as long as you take all the bio/phys/chem requirements its fine.
It just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense career-wise.

At UMich, Finance isn’t a major either. Ross’s undergrad degree is a Bachelor of Business Administration aka BBA. They don’t have majors

You can get your degree from Ross while at the same time completing your pre-med track/requirements. The two are not mutually exclusive in any way.

Ok thanks

You’ll have to plan it carefully because a Ross BBA has a lot of core requirements.

I am a current pre admit and am family friends with someone who just did a ross/pre med combo, did a year consulting in chicago, and is now at a top 10 med school. it’s doable and actually can make you stand out to med schools.

@NUHPME2017 Yeah it’s doable, but it’s hella hard. The thing about it is that you’re taking on the course load of Ross (curriculum here: http://michiganross.umich.edu/programs/bba/curriculum) + the pre-reqs for medical school. Every semester at Ross they’re expecting you to take around 3 business classes, so that really gives you room for 1 or 2 more classes for pre-med classes. Which means that you aren’t getting breadth in your course work. It’ll literally be competitive Ross classes with competitive pre-med classes for the majority of your time in college (pending AP credits and what not).

It used to be quite doable if you come in with lots of relevant AP credits. I notice that Ross has moved some of the courses to year 2. Are there now more business core courses?

I have a student who is trying this (I am Ross faculty) and although he is determined, he is not finding it easy. The cultures of the programs seem pretty different. Ross has lots of group projects. Lots! I’d say give it a try but don’t be surprised if partway through you decide you prefer one over the other.

It is doable, with several provisos.

  1. That you come into Michigan with a lot of AP credits, particularly in Econ, Physics and Calculus BC.
  2. That you are a quick study. Some of us can get high quality work done quickly. I know students in Engineering who maintained 3.7+ GPAs while barely cracking their books open. They were naturally gifted in engineering-related subjects. If you are a natural in subjects like Chemistry and Biology, then it should be possible
  3. That you accept that you are not going to have as much free time to socialize as most of your fellow classmates

Hopefully, you will get into the HPME or PLME programs, in which case, you do not have to make the difficult decision!

I am going to go off on a limb here and say that it is quite possible. I am a current student at Michigan, and I know lots of people doing BME with premed intent. This is tough, because the engineering curves are not too friendly. My friends in Ross, however, have pretty generous curves (between LSA, Ross, and Engineering, Ross has the most generous curves, not to mention a GPA boost for A+ grades) . Although there is essentially no overlap, the curves are certainly in your favor, which is definitely good to know for a premed student.

I know some people pre-pharm/pre-med at Ross, and they are doing quite well for themselves with pretty active social lives.

That’s good to hear…especially the GPA boost. So I got into UMich LSA EA. Does that mean that if I somehow get into Ross later and choose to do the program I would have to take courses between the two schools anyway?
