Can I bring my own mattress to Rutgers?

Like the title says.

I suppose you could. If you put the original mattress back at the end of the year, they wouldn’t know the difference. You can also call housing just to make sure. I don’t see why you would need to though. All the mattresses are comfortable and I’ve never had an old/gross looking one.

If you’re allowed, sure, but you are just better off getting a nice comforter to place on top so it can feel nicer to sleep on.

Or use a thick mattress pad for extra cushion.

Some schools don’t allow it, there’s nothing on the Rutgers website that says I can’t. I’ll call housing.

I stayed overnight during new student orientation and the mattress was old, smelly, and very uncomfortable. For all the money I’m going to be spending on a mattress pad and protector, I was thinking I could just get a cheap IKEA mattress. Do you think that it’s worth it? Could you please share what housing services said? It would be really helpful. Thanks!

Do you know you’ll be staying in a College Ave double? The mattresses in Busch dorms were pretty decent, in my opinion.

No, I’m on Livingston. Honestly speaking though, I do tend to be a bit picky  I’m really debating whether or not I should get a new mattress or just muddle through with a mattress pad & protector. What do most people do?

I am guessing that most people do not bring their own mattress, however, I can understand someone’s preference to bring their own. Remember their bed frames are xlong twins so you’d want to get one to fit.

I would check out your mattress first and go from there. If it is particularly old maybe housing would replace it for you.

I found the Livingston dorm mattresses also new and comfortable. I haven’t heard of anyone bringing their own mattress. I feel like the frames are extra long but the mattresses are not in all 3 of my rooms. My pillows always fell through the space between the mattress and the frame and I would have to stuff something in between.

I agree with rualum that you should check it out first. It would be hard to carry a mattress on top of all the other stuff you need to bring on move-in anyway.

Thanks for the advice! I think I’ll wait follow your advice and wait and see what my mattress is like before buying anything. I was wondering, though, if anyone knows what kind of microwave and fridge are in the dorms and possibly the microwave’s wattage? I would really, really appreciate any info on them :)

One of my apartmentmates last year just put her own mattress on top of the one Rutgers provides. We lived in the Newell Apartments though so RAs couldn’t see that she was sneaking it in. If you do want to try to sneak it in, it’s best to save the task for a day other than move-in.
