can I consider umich a safety??

Basically, its time where I need to put together a list of colleges I will be applying to. I understand the importance of atleast one safety school, and I was wondering if I could consider umich a safety. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Based on umich GPA....I would have about 3.95 gpa
2230 SAT - 800 math/730 verbal/690 writing
SAT II - 710 chem/750 u.s.
Taking hardest courseload available
AP Euro - 4
Total of 8 AP's by the end of high school
Very good public high school on Long Island, school doesn't rank
Various school awards

EC's
JV tennis - 9, 10
Italian Club - 9,10,11
Stock Market Club - 9,10,11
Orchestra (cello) - 9,10,11
Foreign Language Honor Society (spanish) - vice president
National Honor Society
Model Congress - 10 - central committee
Teen group that helps think of ways to bring teen's to the public library (one of the founding members)
Stock market class outside of school taught by a former Wharton graduate - 9,10,11

tutor/babysitter
Interning this summer at Mercantile Exchange in NYC for same Wharton graduate

So ...would I definitely get in, or should I consider an easier school as a definite safety.

I wouldn't say there's a 100% chance you're in, but it's definitely a safety. Just apply early enough and you'll be perfectly fine.

umich is never a safety school however, your chances are excellent but your ECs aren't that great

i would say 99.99 percent ur in.

I wouldn't say that... I'd suggest you look at the records of who from your HS has been accepted in the past, and if possible, compare their academic record to yours. I realize that detailed stats may not be available, but I'm sure you could get some idea.

Based on my school's past acceptances, UMich would be a safety/match (leaning towards safety) for many of our seniors. Along the same lines, UPenn would be more of a match/low reach (as opposed to high reach) because they have a history of accepting many students from here. It really depends on the HS.

That having been said, you seem to have a great chance.

yea cmon, U of M can alway be a safety if u do the right thing and have the really good stats...and we've already discussed that EC's pretty much don't matter that much n e ways in the UM admissions process

Not to sound arrogant, but I know my chances are fairly solid. My real question is....do you think this college is safe enough to be the only college that isn't a reach?? I already know I would be happy to go here if I didn't make it into lets say ivy league or other highly selective colleges.

If that's your question I would apply to at least another school such as UMICH. Cause you never know, but as you said your chances are really really good. But if I were you I would apply to another university that you might consider a safety and wouldn't mind going there. Be on the safe side, the extra time to fill out the app will pay off with a lot of peace.

thanks for the advice docintraining...it does make a lot of sense.

I wouldn't want to consider UM a true safety for anyone, but if you apply early enough you should be able to get an answer by October or November, and if you haven't gotten in to anywhere by then, that still leaves you time to apply to somewhere that is, well, safer.

I applied to Purdue and got my acceptance the first week of September, so I completely scrapped any schools that I thought were lower on my wishlist (which also tended to be a solid safety).

Some good students don't get into their safety schools. It just happens. Sometimes it's a fluke, and sometimes it isn't, but yeah, I would consider a Umich a "safety school" for you. And the comment about your EC's not being that great (even though it was facetious), EC's really don't matter...take it from me, I didn't have any. ;)

i wouldnt consider umich a safety school, more like a very solid match. for safeties i would consider gw, brandeis, bucknell, maryland, union, gettysburg, penn state. also..try state schools for safeties as wells (deffinately binghamton) becuase youd get in, and they may put you in an honors program or give you some aid. i would think this would be even better than any of the schools i named above, because those are pretty expensive and if its a safety i dont know if its worth paying all that moeny for. while on the other hand, a good state school, maybe even with a scholarship is a superior choice. binghamton is a pretty good school too, so i would consider it. i think an awful safety, however, would be wesleyan. actually i think it would be a terrible match, and an even worse reach school. in fact, i dont think you should apply there at all. ive heard some bad things...

i agree with ml41etc. unless you have some extracurricular awards you're not telling us about, UM wouldn't be a safety for you, but more an appropriate match. your scores and grades are strong, but it'll take more than that to ensure acceptance at a school very selective with out-of-state admissions. good luck.

buddy, UPenn a match, what ru smoking? They don't take anyone from my school and we have 7 going to Dartmouth.

UMich is a safety for u, but apply to another one.

I personally don't like the idea that I"m going to someone's safety school.......jk.

If you are that smart (...) you'll probably get free applications in the mail from typical safety schools....I got ones from Loyola in Chicago, Tulane, Oberlin, and Johns Hopkins (not really a safety)..but still. I applied to all of them, so those were my safeties. The same may work for you.

I wouldn't have U of M as your only back-up though...God works in strange ways..and he might come and mess up your application in the UM admissions office..forever ruining your life.

collegekid, I said a "high match"--as opposed to a "definite reach"--meaning that a qualified student stands a better chance than most of getting in, considering the statistics. In my school case, it would be Penn; at your school, it may well be Dartmouth. The point remains that the high school's history is relevant when making conjectures.

Guys thanks for the large amount of feedback....based on the suggestions I have gotten here I figure as a "safety platoon" I will probably apply to UMICH and Binghamton..possibly 1 more.

that sounds sensible :)

VERY sensible actually
