I am wondering if it is possible to major in two non related fields while in college? I wish to have degrees in both nursing and marine biology. I want to have careers in both at some point in my life. I also want to have a minor in something like international studies. Please tell me if I’m crazy or if this is a possibility. Thanks!
In theory, it possible to double major in two unrelated fields. In reality, it really depends on what those fields are and the particular college you attend.
For example, if you said you wanted to double major in biology and international studies - that’s usually pretty doable. (Marine biology is typically not a major at the undergrad level, although some colleges offer it.)
Generally, double majoring in pre-professional majors - especially one like nursing - is difficult, at least within the context of a regular 4-5 year bachelor’s degree. Nursing requires a lot of courses taken in specific sequences; sometimes, nursing majors require more credits than other majors. The nursing major requires a lot of studying. In addition, nurses have to participate in clinical rotations. So double majoring with anything in nursing would be pretty difficult; if you really want to be a nurse, you’d need to concentrate on majoring in nursing.
There are some alternatives. For example, accelerated second bachelor’s in nursing (BSN) programs are pretty common. So one option is to major in (marine) biology in college, and then do an accelerated BSN program for 14-18 months after you graduate to become a nurse.
Depending on your college, it may be possible to add a minor in international studies to a nursing major. But majoring in biology and minoring in international studies is definitely possible.
