Hello! I'm fairly new to this forum, so I apologize in advance if I posted in the wrong section.

I graduated from high school last month and I'm very indecisive about what I want to become. Mostly I want to be in the Communications field, but I know that it isn't as steady or, in some instances, financially pleasing as a job like nursing.

I thought I could double major: four years for Nursing (I decided to go to my local state college because I wasn't sure of what I wanted to become, then transfer to a University after the two years for Nursing) and 2 years for Communications. I thought it was perfect, the extra work would be fine, but then my sister's boyfriend told me that I would have to do each major part time and that would take up more years. Is that true? Should I just take Nursing for the four years, for my back up and economic needs, then pursue the career in Communications?

PLEASE, PLEASE, reply back! In need of serious responses. Thank you in advance!

As a nurse practitioner let me say you don’t choose nursing because it is “financially pleasing”. Its a passion, a calling, and a commitment, not a paycheck

Can you? Probably, but exact rules and procedures will depend on your school.
Should you? That’s a different matter entirely.

I second what kandcsmom said: Don’t do nursing just for the money. You’ll be miserable if you do, both during school and at your job afterward. This is true for anything that anyone pursues solely because it’s “financially pleasing”, which is why I’ll give some standard advice: Don’t go into a field unless you have a genuine interest in it.

What does he mean by that, exactly? The exact policies will depend on the school, as I mentioned before, so how true this is will depend on what exactly he meant and what school you’re going to. An adviser would be able to give you a definitive answer, and if you do decide to double major make absolutely sure that you’re in close contact with advisers from both majors (speaking from experience as a double major).

Thank you, both very much @PhantomVirgo and @kandcsmom. I know money shouldn’t be everything, but I always wanted to work with babies before I found my love in Media Communications. So I thought being a nurse in the pediatric field would be a perfect alternative as I saw if Communications was right for me…

I will be calling the school’s advisors and see what I can do…

Do you mind me asking how long it took for you to double major and in what, @PhantomVirgo?

Not at all!

I’m currently a double major in computer science and linguistics, going into my third year. I’m on track to graduate in four years, possibly even a quarter early depending on class availability my senior year. The main reason I’m able to graduate in that amount of time is because I cover all but a couple general education requirements between my majors. In that sense, I really lucked out. That, and I’ve kept in contact with major advisers.
