Can I email teacher for letter of REC since it is summer?

I’m not sure if this is the right forum to post this question but it is active so I assume I can get an answer. I really want to start applying to schools asap, and since some schools require a letter of REC, would it be inappropriate to email a teacher over the summer for a REC letter? I have asked for letters before but that was during the school year.
Also, how exactly do rec letters work with the common app? Can I submit one letter to all the schools or do I need multiple letters from multiple people? Also, how does the guidance form work? Sorry for all the questions but any info would help a lot.

you might want to reconsider the wisdom of asking teachers during the summer when they are not paid to teach give up their free time to write your rec. And that’s aside from the somewhat rude method of asking via email instead of in person.

So everyone should drop what they’re doing to make your wish come true?

@mikemac yeah that’s what I was thinking. thank you

Personally I don’t think it would be rude to ask over the summer, via email if a teacher will write you a letter in the fall, but it would definitely be rude to expect them to actually do it over the summer.

Your app isn’t complete until your school sends in your transcript – in the fall. It’s fine to get a head start but no college will be looking at your stuff until October by earliest.

It’s OK to email a rec letter request. IMHO.

And you get one letter from your targeted teachers, they get uploaded to your common app account, and when you’re ready to submit your portion of the app to specific schools, you indicate which rec letters you want the school to receive.

@T26E4 ok thank you! So If all my schools on require one rec letter, I can send the same letter from the same teacher to three different schools

yep. That’s one of the reasons Common App and Coalition App were started.

Teachers do get paid over the summer-- both my parents are teachers. Whether or not they will check their email is another story. If they can assign us hw to do over the summer, they can write u a letter

Teachers only get paid over the summer because that’s how their payment is structured (much like paying tuition in monthly installments). It does not mean they are expected to work over the summer.
