Can I get any kind of Financial Aid?

I was born in Texas so I am American but I have lived all of my life in Mexico. I heard somewhere that to get Financial Aid you need to live in the US for at least 2 years. AM I elegible for financial aid?
Most of the schools I am applying are private only one is public. If I do get finanancial aid is it in all the US or only in the state I was born/live in? Thanks for your help!

If you are a US citizen, I think you are eligible for financial aid. If not, then you may be eligible for some international aid at some institutions.

Either way, many private schools should be able to help. Public may be more difficult though.

You need to check the guidelines for Texas. They have something going for folks who cannot file the FAFSA but are residents of some kind. I had never heard of it before...but you might want to call the schools...or look for info on the TAFSA (to see if you qualify to file that). I am not familiar with this but if you call the school finaid department at a Texas public university, they should be able to answer your questions.

Since you are an American citizen, as long as you have a Social Securfity number, you should have no problems receiving Federal funding. If you don't have a Social Security number, you need to get one ASAP. FAFSA requirements do not stipulate that you must have lived in America to qualify, only that you are a US Citizen or a qualified non-citizen.

Institutional and state aid may differ, as some require you to be a resident of the state to qualify for the funding.

how do i get the social security number?

^^^ a Canadian citizen can't get a social security number. You are NOT eligible for US FEDERAL aid. this is for Americans

Sue, I think you mean Social Security Numbers are for US Citizens (since Canadians are Americans). :)

nit picker :-) yes, of course, so are mexican's for that matter

I think sue might have accidently posted her response on this thread instead of a thread at about the same time by a Canadian student asking about FAFSA and SS numbers.
