Can I get in?

I am a black female currently at a top 1% school in the nation and the hardest school in my state. I moved the start of freshman year and was not ready for the rigor I experienced at this school. Here are the classes I have taken and the grades I have received:

As far as standardized test scores, I focus on ACT and have a 31 composite score.
Extra curricular activities: Orchestra leadership council, NHS, Mu Alpha Theta, Key Club, Chemistry Club, Youth Group, (president) HOSA competitor, over 1000 volunteer hours (200 from 1 organization, 800 from the other) been playing violin at nursing homes since middle school

Awards:
NAACP Youth service award
Violin solo competition- superior performance
HOSA 5th place area competitor

I want to apply to Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Harvard, MIT, Brown, Dartmouth, Columbia, Princeton and University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Do I have a chance at any of these? If not, what universities would you recommend for me that have good Pre-Med programs?

Your grades are too low for those Ivy Leagues.

Do you think my extracurricular activities, standardized test scores and course load can get me in?

Those school have rejected people with perfect test scores and amazing EC’s. Your EC’s are mediocre compared to THEM but they’re not bad in general. I’d say you have a better shot somewhere else considering there are many straight A students with perfect test scores that apply every year. Just being realistic.

What other schools would you recommend?

It depends on a lot of things such as where you live, how much your parents make, do you want to stay close to home, etc.

I am looking for schools in the east cost. It doesn’t matter how far away from home I am, and my parents have no trouble paying for my education.

How about the traditionally “black” colleges? Those are phenomenal schools but don’t get the recognition that they deserve. Look into Howard University.

No, I don’t think I would fit in there. Are there any non traditional black colleges you would recommend?

Try Morehouse or Spellman?
Here’s a list: http://www.college-■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/historically_black_colleges_universities.htm

Sorry, I meant schools that are not majority black.

I would suggest Fordham, Temple, Pitt, Rhodes, Clark, Mount Holyoke, BU, Syracuse, DePaul (probably a safety), Goucher, University of Miami, Tulane, Wake Forest, and Northeastern. They are not as selective as the schools you listed above, which are all probably out of reach for you, but they are very good nevertheless.

I am definitely interested in BU and Northeastern. Do you think I could get in there?

Your chances at BU are probably a little better than NEU. The ACT range for the 25th-75th percentile at BU is 26-30 (making your scores very competitive), whereas at Northeastern it is 30-33 (meaning you are in the lower end of the spectrum). Definitely apply to both, but also make sure you have some safeties as well.

Also, when applying, make sure to highlight all your ECs as they are going to be needed in making up for your GPA, which is a bit below average for those schools .

My school is well known to a lot of colleges as being extremely competitive. I have a 4.1 GPA on a weighted scale and I am in the top 24% of my class. Do you think there is any chance of me being able to get into Johns Hopkins? It is my dream school.

How many kids from your school have been accepted to colleges in the past? This will be the best indicator of how much they will account for your school’s difficulty.

97% of the students at my school attend 4 year universities.
