Can I get in?

I know a lot of people must ask these questions but I just want to know if I have a chance at getting into Yale University. I’m a freshman in VA and I’ve had 9 A’s and 1 b but that was in 7th grade cuz I took algebra early. I’m in debate and I’m hoping to win competitions. I’ve been volunteering at a elementary school and next year I want to start volunteering at a hospital. I’ve been taking piano lessons since 3rd grade and I’m hoping to work as a nurse when I’m a senior. I also want to get serious in a club, maybe habitat for humanity, and get a leadership spot. I’m taking journalism and want to be editor in chief my senior year and join nhs.

@Student5672: Welcome to College Confidential! The Common Application does not allow you to list an activity, honor, award, grade, or GPA below 9th grade. So while taking piano lessons since 3rd grade is admirable and impressive, Admissions is going to want to know what you’ve accomplished in piano during 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade. Ditto with math in 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade. And it’s the same with debate, journalism, habitat for humanity and volunteering. Here’s a great article you should read. Although it’s about MIT, everything in it applies to Yale: http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/applying_sideways.

Thanks @gibby
Just wondering did you get into Yale? Or MIT?

^^ My son just graduated from Yale last month and my daughter graduated from Harvard last year.

Lol

@Student5672, You are a high school freshman? If so, you’d be best served coming back to these boards in a couple of years.

Actually, there are some steps you can take now. Is your high school academically competitive? You probably can’t change your high school at this point but picking the right high school courses now to set you up for taking challenging courses later on
