Hi everyone, my GPA will be a 4.1 after this semester and I got a 1140 on the newly designed SAT. I am a junior and am wondering what are my chances into get into a school like UCLA? I know my SAT score is weak, but I am curious of my chances. I have over 100 hours in volunteer hours and am president of two active cubs at my school. My dad has a lot of expectations on me, and I feel very pressured. He thinks I can get into Harvard! Please be up front and realistic. I would like any input or advice. Thank you very much
i am afraid UCLA is out of your reach. Both your GPA and especially your SAT are low for UCLA. Improve your SAT (if you still have time?) then mid-tiered UCs (UCSB, UCD, UCI) could be possible.
Parents are often unrealistic about their children’s chances. Encourage your dad to start reading College Confidential to become familiar with today’s college admissions realities.
Calculate your UC GPA if the 4.1 GPA posted is not the UC GPA: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
This is the capped UC GPA. UCLA also uses the uncapped UC GPA where you have unlimited honors points for the Honors/AP/IB classes 10-11th.
Your SAT is on the low end for UCLA, so definitely consider some test prep before taking again. The UC’s require all test scores, do not super score and will take the highest score from a single sitting.
Check the Freshman profile for comparison of your stats.

UCLA will consider your EC’s and essays on their application review so it is very hard to predict your chances. Definitely apply, but make sure you have some solid Match and safety schools on your list that you are willing to attend.
Good Luck.
I’m afraid to say it, but I have to agree with the first post: UCLA is out of reach, you won’t even be considered with that SAT score. Harvard and any other extremely selective school is even further out of reach, I advise you not apply to any highly selective institutions. However, if you improve your SAT score, you do stand a chance at mid or lower tier UCs. This being said, you would have to improve it remarkably; I believe an 1140 is below average even at UC Santa Cruz.
