Can I get into an Ivy or as good a school with straight B's Freshman Year? I didnt get any other B's the rest of HS. Can I still get it since I had this upward trend? My overall GPA is still high. Do you know anyone who didnt get A's and got into an Ivy?

Maybe you could get into UPenn, Cornell, or Dartmouth, but only if you have high Standardized Test scores to make up for it. I’ll assume the URM hook isn’t there b/c you didn’t mention it.

^Your chances go up tremendously if you apply ED/EA (if you get in ED, you must go to the school though). Cornell, statistically speaking, is the ‘easiest,’ and probably the best fit if you want to be an Engineer.

What’s your rank?

You should apply to schools that don’t look at first year grades. I think Princeton and Stanford don’t

The above is yet another myth spread on CC. While those schools do not use freshmen year GPA to recalculate your GPA, they strongly consider rank.

Redroses is completely correct. However, ccaccount, I have seen some crazy cases, you just have to have the thing that the colleges want. I would focus on your extracurricular more, since standardized tests are not what get you in – they’re kind of just indicators, not as important. The other way around, i’ve seen people with very low standardized scores get in. Good luck.

As usual, Redroses knows what he’s talking about.

Don’t think that Princeton and Stanford will simply not count that year. That’s false. They’re not going to give you a free ticket; I speak from experience, I got 2 B’s freshman year and haven’t gotten a B since. Colleges that selective will not ignore an entire year of high school: because of my stupidity in slacking off a little and getting those two B’s, my class rank dropped to number 3 in my class, whereas I would still be valedictorian otherwise. Class rank is very important to top schools.
