Can I get into Berkeley with B's?

Hi guys- my dream school is University of California Berkeley. Currently, I have a 4.96 GPA (My school’s system for weighted GPA is out of wack) and approximately a 3.91-ish unweighted GPA. I have received B’s on Midterms and Finals, and 2 semester grades, but my final grades are A’s. I’m a current sophomore, rising junior, taking 3 AP classes: AP computer Science Principles, AP Calculus AB, and AP world History. What do you think my chances of getting into UCB are, based on academics alone? I have not taken my standardized tests yet.

yes, of course you can, not everyone at Berkeley is a 4.00 student. Average UCB unweighted GPA is probably in the 3.92-3.95/4.0 range, so that’s what, 2-3 Bs?

Impossible to chance people strictly on grades, since test scores are an important component, as well as essays, rigor, ECs, etc.

Below is what UCB considers during the application review:

  • BERKELEY

  • Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores
  • Important: Extracurricular activities, Volunteer work, Work experience
  • Considered: Character/personal qualities, First generation college student, State residency, AP/IBLH exam scores
  • Note: Thorough review of academic performance; likely contribution to intellectual and cultural vitality of the campus; diversity in personal background and experience; demonstrated qualities in leadership, motivation, concern for others and community; non-academic achievement in the performing arts, athletics or employment; demonstrated interest in major.
  • LOR's by invitation only as of 2017

As stated by @ProfessorPlum168, no one chance you for UCB on academics alone and especially since you have not completed Junior year.

The UC’s have their own GPA calculation and to get an accurate GPA, you need to have your 10-11th grades for all the a-g courses. UC’s will look at Unweighted UC GPA, Capped weighted UC GPA (cap of 8 honors points) and Uncapped UC GPA (unlimited honors points).

You also have no test scores and then you have the subjective aspects of your application which are the essays, awards, EC’s and LOR’s.

I suggest you get rid of the notation of a “dream school”, work hard on your academics, do some SAT/ACT test prep, continue with your EC’s, aim for some leadership positions and enjoy High school. When the time comes next year to formulate your college list, then you can see where you stand.

Below is some UC statistical data from last year’s Freshman admits to give you an idea what to aim for if you want attend UCB.

2018 Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79 capped weighted and not major specific:
UCB: 1%

2018 Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19 capped weighted and not major specific:
UCB: 10%

2018 Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 4.20 or above capped weighted and not major specific:
UCB: 37%

2018 UC capped weighted GPA averages:
UCB: 4.23

2018 Data:
25th - 75th percentiles for SAT:

UCB: 1360-1540

25th - 75th percentiles for ACT:
UCB: 30-35

I got in applying as L&S CS, and I had like 9 B’s (which is so many lmao) total but I had a 1520 SAT and 750 Math 2. Idk if this is helpful lol. Also I should add I was an IB student.

Also, what major you applying for? For example EECS is obviously going to be harder than getting in as L&S.

Can you tell me more about what you did? I’m trying to apply CS too and I also have a lot of B’s :frowning: and I also have a 34 ACT and a 800 Math 2. I would love some advice for application season and moving forwards!
